Field Hockey Falls to No. 8 Stonehill, 5-1

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team lost to No. 8 Stonehill College 5-1 at W.B. Mason Stadium in its first conference game of the season. The Owls drop to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in NE10 play, while Stonehill improves to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Sophomore Ellie Craft (Hamden, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal in the third period. Senior Brianna Craft (Hamden, Conn.) made 11 saves, while sophomore Julia Schaff (Cheshire, Conn.) collected her second defensive save of the season.

How It Happened
  • Stonehill took a 2-0 lead going into halftime on goals by Sophie Schreck and Emma Mawn.
  • The Skyhawks extended their lead to 4-0 in the third quarter on Schreck second goal of the game and on a goal by Elisha Brinkman.
  • In the third quarter, Ellie Craft scored her first career collegiate goal to cut the Stonehill lead to 4-1. 
  • Madi Weber scored a goal for Stonehill in the fourth period to make the score 5-1.

Notes
  • Brianna Craft made a season-high 11 saves as the goalkeeper. 
  • Freshman goalkeeper Janelle Ward (Kitchener, Ontario) made five saves in her relief.
  • Ellie Craft scored her first collegiate goal in the second period, becoming the first freshman for the Owls to score this season.
  • Shaff leads the team with two defensive saves this season.
