Women's Basketball Downed By Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 79-56. The Owls fall to 8-10 overall and 2-8 in the Northeast 10, while the Ravens improve to 8-9 overall and 2-8 in the NE10.

Redshirt freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) was SCSU's offensive leader as she registered a career-high 22 points and added five rebounds. Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) collected 18 points, six assists and four steals, while redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) collected 10 points, six rebounds and five steals.

How It Happened
  • Both squads traded points in the opening minutes of the game until Franklin Pierce exploded for a 17-2 run and held the Owls to just a nine-point quarter.
  • The Owls found their footing in the second quarter as they controlled the first five minutes of play eventually coming within two points of the Ravens lead. A three-pointer at the buzzer gave Franklin Pierce a five-point lead heading into the half.
  • The third quarter started off with Fressle draining a three and putting the Owls back within two of the Ravens. Both squads eventually traded baskets, but Franklin Pierce's offense remained consistent as they finished 30 minutes of play up by nine points.
  • In the final quarter of play, the Ravens offense caught fire going, on 14-1 run and holding their largest lead of the game at 5:22 up by 19-points. Franklin Pierce's persistent effort, three 20-point quarters and 53.3% field-goal percentage proved to be the difference-maker as they went on to snag a 79-56 lead at home.  

Notes
  • Alexa Kellner topped a career-high in points with 22 against Franklin Pierce. Her previous career-high was set against Bentley on Jan. 11 when she had 15.
  • Imani Wheeler has recorded double-digit points in six straight games with 18 points against the Ravens.
  • With six assists against Franklin Pierce, Wheeler has dished out four or more assists in six straight games. She has also snagged three or more steals in four of her last five games played.
  • Five steals are a career-high for Jessica Fressle. Her previous career-high came during the 2018-19 against Le Moyne on Nov. 17, 2018 when she recorded four.
