Women's Basketball Falls To Stonehill

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to Stonehill College, 64-54. The Owls fall to 8-11 overall and 2-9 in the Northeast 10, while the Skyhawks improve to 12-5 overall and 8-3 in the NE10.

Redshirt freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) had another solid game for Southern as she collected 16 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while shooting 5-for-11 from the field and 4-for-8 from three-point range. Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) notched 15 points, four steals and two assists. Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

How It Happened
  • Southern opened the game on a 12-4 run, but Stonehill battled back with an 8-0 run over the last three minutes of the first quarter to tie the game at 12. 
  • The Skyhawks collected five points in the final three minutes of the second quarter allowing them to take an eight point lead heading into halftime.
  • Stonehill opened the first two minutes of the third quarter on an 11-0 run and led by 19, their largest lead of the game. Both squads traded baskets, but the Skyhawks maintained their lead and 11-point lead at the end of 30 minutes played. 
  • The Owls found a groove at the beginning of the fourth quarter as they went on a 14-5 run coming within two points of the Skyhawks lead. Stonehill's offense finished the final minute of the game with six points and extended their lead to 10 points leading them to a 64-54 victory on the road.

  • Imani Wheeler has recorded double-digit points in seven-straight games with 15 points against Stonehill. 
  • Wheeler has snagged three or more steals in five of her last six games played.
  • Alexa Kellner collected double-digit points in four of her last five games.
