Women's Basketball Falls To Pace In 2020 Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to Pace University, 72-51. The Owls fall to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in Northeast 10, while the Setters improve to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the NE10.
 
Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) was the Owls' offensive leader against Pace as she registered a team-high 17 points and chipped in four assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block, shooting 3-for-6 from three-point range. Redshirt junior Edjnaija Lassiter (Boston, Mass.) collected 14 points and three rebounds, while shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range. Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) tallied 11 points and redshirt freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) had eight points, six rebounds and a steal for the Owls.

How It Happened
  • Pace opened the game with a 7-1 run in the first four minutes, but Southern gained momentum, tying the game with a pair of Kellner free throws and five points from Lassiter. The lead changed five times in the remaining four minutes, but the Setters finished the first ten up by two.
  • The Owls attempted to catch the Setters lead in the second quarter, but Pace's offense pushed and outscored Southern 16-12.
  • Pace's offense came out blazing in the third quarter as the Setters outscored the Owls 25-10. 
  • Both teams traded points in the fourth quarter, but the Setters came out on top with a 21-point victory. Wheeler collected 10 of her 17 points in the final ten minutes of play. 
     
Notes
  • Imani Wheeler had 18 field goal attempts, which is the most she has attempted since Nov. 26 against American International.
  • Ednaija Lassister has registered double-digit points in four of her last five games.

The Owls will host Adelphi University on Wednesday, Jan. 8 for a 5:30 p.m. conference matchup with the Panthers at Moore Field House.
