Baseball Opens Season With 12-11 Win In Extra Innings At Florida National

LAUDERDALE LAKE, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team opened its 2020 season with a 12-11 win at Florida National in a game that went 10 innings. With the season-opening victory, the Owls will head into its doubleheader against FNU at 1-0 while the Conquistadors drop to 1-6 on the season.

Freshman Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a RBI in the first game of his collegiate career while classmate Zach Bedryzcuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two walks. Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two stolen bases.  Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) also blasted the Owls' first home run of the season and also scored three runs.

On the mound, Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) picked up the win in relief after hurling 1 1/3 innings of one-hit ball in which he allowed just one run while striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Redahan's first-inning home run put the Owls out in front early with a 1-0 lead. Southern tacked on two more runs in the third when Bedryzcuk scored on a wild pitch before Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) singled to score Zambito.
  • Southern made it 5-0 when Bedryzcuk singled home Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) before scoring on a balk.
  • Transfer Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) was solid in his Owls' debut, holding the Conquistadors scoreless through 4 1/3 innings before giving up a home run to FNU in the fifth.
  • After Florida National got on the board in the fifth, Southern pushed its lead to 7-1 on a sacrifice fly by Cloutier to score John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) before Zambito drove in Drewry.
  • In the sixth, Rodgers was tagged for two more runs before leaving with two runners on in favor of Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.). With a six-run sixth, FNU tied the game at 7-7.
  • In the seventh, Redahan scored on a passed ball to give Southern an 8-7 lead before FNU tied it again in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Zambito delivered again in the eighth, driving in Bedryzcuk with the go-ahead run to make it 9-8. In the ninth, the Owls pushed their lead to 11-8 on a RBI single by Drewry before Zambito worked a base-on-balls to force Peyton Farina in and give the Owls a three-run lead.
  • After FNU tied it in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run outburst, Zack Healy drove in Redahan with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th before Henry retired the Conquistadors in order, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

NOTES
  • Zambito's three-RBI day was a career-best for the third-year Owl and just the second multiple-RBI game of his career.
  • Redahan's home run was the second of his career and his first since Feb. 24, 2019 against Wilmington
  • Henry's win out of the bullpen puts him at 3-0 in two seasons for the Owls. He has now allowed just three earned runs in his last 14 innings pitched in eight appearances dating back to last season for a 1.93 ERA in that span.
  • With three hits each, Drewry and Bedryzcuk become the first freshman to collect three hits in their collegiate debut since Tyler Criscuolo went 3-for-5 against Chestnut Hill on Feb. 27, 2016.
