Baseball Takes 5-0 Decision Against Mercy

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-0 win against Mercy in a non-conference matchup at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Transfer Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) picked up his first win as an Owl after spinning seven shutout innings while scattering four hits and striking out 10. Sophomore Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) struck out three over the final two innings to complete the shutout.

At the plate, Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) connected for his first collegiate home run with a three-run bomb in the first inning. Connor Redahan () was 2-for-4 while John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) also had a 2-for-3 with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls jumped on the board early, pushing four across in their first at-bats. Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) walked to lead-off the game and then stole second base. After Connor Redahan was hit by a pitch, Mike Demartino's ground ball to second was misplayed to load the bases. John Spoto's sacrifice fly scored Zambito to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
  • Drewry then followed with his first career home run to plate Redahan and DeMartino and give the Owls a 4-0 lead.
  • From there, Rodgers was in control, holding Mercy hitless until the bottom of the third inning.
  • Rodgers allowed just three runners to reach second and only one to reach third. After a lead-off single in the fourth inning, Rodgers retired seven straight before a one-out single in the sixth. He then struck-out four of the last five batters he faced, including all three in the seventh.
  • In the seventh inning, Cam O'Toole led off with a single before Isaiah Likely entered the game to pinch run. Connor Redahan then singled, moving Likely to third who would then score on a wild pitch.
  • Mike Ferrett came on to pitch the eighth and the ninth innings in relief of Rodgers, retiring all three batters he faced in the eighth before pitching out of a jam in the ninth. Mercy's first two batters singled before Ferrett struck-out two of the last three batters in the inning to end the Knights' threat.
NOTES
  • The Owls' win was their first shutout since a 17-0 win against New Haven on Apr. 16, 2019. It was also their first shutout away from home since a 4-0 win against Concordia (N.Y.) on Mar. 9, 2019 in Lake Worth, Fla.
  • Southern improves to 15-2 all-time against Mercy dating back to their first meeting in 2008.
  • The Owls have now won eight straight against the Knights and also claimed their eighth shutout against Mercy all-time.
  • Rodgers' 10 strikeouts against Mercy are the most for an Owls starter since Ronnie Rossomando fanned 10 against American International on Apr. 19, 2019.
  • Drewry is off to a great start through his first two collegiate games as the first-year Owl is 4-for-7 with four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Reaching back to last season, Redahan has now hit safely in six-straight games, while he's reached base in 13 straight.
