Women's Basketball Edged By Le Moyne

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to Le Moyne College, 69-58 at Moore Field House. The Owls fall to 9-16 overall and 3-13 in the Northeast 10, while the Dolphins improve to 16-8 overall and 12-5 in the NE10. 

Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) tallied 19 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block, while shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) registered 12 points, five steals, four assists and four rebounds, shooting 50 percent from three-point range. Freshman Amani Boston (Dorcester, Mass.) recorded 11 points, three assists, two steals, while going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

How It Happened
  • The opening quarter saw both teams trade baskets for the first seven minutes of play. Southern finished the quarter on a 8-0 run, five of which came from the hands of Fressle, and led by four.
  • Le Moyne attempted to catch the Owls in the second quarter, but a 9-0 run beginning at the 5:11 mark helped to give Southern a 12-point lead with two minutes remaining. The Dolphins added two quick baskets with under a minute remaining to cut the Owls lead. Southern entered halftime with seven-point lead.
  • The Dolphins came out of the locker room on fire, going on a 10-3 run and tying the game at 32-all on a three-pointer from Colleen Corcran. Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) responded with a three-pointer to put the Owls back on top, 35-32, which ignited a 12-3 run that was capped by Kellner's second three-pointer of the quarter. In the final minute and a half in the third quarter, Le Moyne exploded with a 12-2 run and took a one point lead going into the final stretch. 
  • In the opening minute of the third quarter, Le Moyne collected eight quick points and extended their lead to nine. Southern responded with seven unanswered points and cut Le Moyne's lead down to two, 55-53. Five quick points by the Dolphins expanded their lead to seven. With a Wheeler three-pointer at the 2:50 mark, the Owls were back within four. A 7-0 run in the final minute, five of which came from free throws, pushed the Dolphins to a 69-58 victory on the road. 

Notes
  • Imani Wheeler has recorded double-digit points in 13-straight games, as she scored 12 points against Le Moyne. She has notched double-digit points in all but four games this season. The last player to score double-digit points in 13-straight games was Taylor McLaughlin during the 2016-2017 season. McLaughlin recorded 13-straight games of double-digit points from Nov. 30, 2016 to Jan. 21, 2017. 
  • Wheeler has tallied three-or-more steals in six of her last seven games. She sits at 80 total steals this year and 216 in her career. 
  • Jessica Fressle has had double-digit points in five of her last six games including two back-to-back 20 point games. 
  • The Owls were a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line with Fressle going 6-for-6 and Boston going 4-for-4. 
  • Wheelers five steals were the most she has recorded in a game since she had eight against American International College and the most by any Owl since Fressle recorded five against Franklin Pierce on Jan. 22.
