Baseball Drops Two To New York Tech

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against nationally-ranked No. 12 New York Tech, 25-7 and 5-3, in a non-conference matchup at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.  With the two losses, Southern drops to 2-2 overall while New York Tech improves to 3-0.

Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) led the Owls offensive with four RBI in the doubleheader, with two in each game. Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J), Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.), Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) and Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) also drove in runs in the first game while DeMartino went 2-for-4 in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • The Owls pushed five runs across in the fifth after Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) reached on an error followed by back-to-back singles by Trevor Whalen (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Anthony Zambito, with Zambito driving in Cloutier with the Owls first run.
  • Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) then singled to center field to load the bases before Connor Redahan was hit by a pitch to force Whalen in. Mike DeMartino's ground ball to first scored Zambito before Mike Ferrett singled down the right field line to score Redahan and Diaz.
  • Ferrett singled again in the eighth inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Billy Sullivan.

GAME 2
  • New York Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead when it manufactured a pair of runs.
  • Southern broke through with a three-run fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Connor Redahan walked to lead off the inning before moving to third on a single by Mike DeMartino. Mike Ferrett then tripled to right-center field to plate Redahan and DeMartino to tie the game at 2-2. Jack Drewry's ground ball to second was enough to score Ferrett and give the Owls a 3-2 lead.
  • Owls starting pitcher Joe Nemchek worked out of several jams, as the Bears placed runners in scoring position in every inning. After giving up two runs in the first, Nemchek settled in and pitched four scoreless innings while striking out seven.
  • After a pair of hits to lead off the sixth inning, Nemchek was relieved by Tommy Hughes in the sixth.
  • After a sacrifice bunt moved two runners over, the next NYIT batter walked to load the bases. A ground ball scored the game-tying run before two unearned runs scored more crossed on a fielding error to give the Bears a 5-3 lead.
  • The Owls staged a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with Redahan spraying a two-out single, but New York Tech was able to work out of the jam.
