Solid Defensive Play Leads Women's Basketball To Victory Over AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated American International College, 49-34. The Owls improve to 9-14 and 3-11 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-17 overall and 4-11 in the NE10.
 
Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) registered a game-high 22 points, grabbed 11 boards and recorded two blocks. Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) tallied 11 points, a game-high seven assists, three steals and three rebounds, while classmate Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) finished with 10 rebounds and three steals.

How It Happened
  • The first quarter was tightly contested, with four different lead changes. AIC took their largest lead of the quarter at 6-1 with 7:50 remaining, but the Owls ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 13-8 lead. 
  • Southern's defense held the Yellow Jackets to 1-9 shooting and forced five turnovers during the run. 
  • Both teams were strong defensively in the second quarter, as Southern and AIC held each other to nine points. The Owls took a 22-17 lead into halftime. 
  • AIC cut the Southern lead to 22-20, but the Owls outscored the Yellow Jackets 9-2 over the next 4:30 to take a 31-22 lead. Fressle scored seven of Southern's nine points. AIC was able to cut Southern's lead to 33-26 to end the quarter.
  • Wheeler scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to give Southern their largest lead to that point at 38-26. AIC brought the lead back down to single-digits with 5:24 remaining.
  • Fressle capped a 7-2 run to take a 45-32 lead, their largest of the game, with 2:10 remaining, and won 49-34. 
  • Southern's defense held AIC to single-digit point quarters in all four quarters. 
 

Notes
  • Jessica Fressle recorded her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Her first double-double came against nationally-ranked Adelphi when she had 10 points and 10 rebounds on Jan. 8, 2020.
  • This is the seventh game this season that Fressle has scored 20-or-more points.
  • Imani Wheeler has recorded double-digit points in 11-straight games, as she scored 11 against the Yellow Jackets. She has notched double-digit points in all but four games this season.
  • Wheeler has tallied three-or-more steals in six of her last seven games played.
  • Aaliyah Walker registered her second double-digit rebound total with 10 rebounds against AIC.
  • The last time Southern held their opponent to 34 points or fewer in a game was on Dec. 30, 2011 against Dominican during a 70-32 win.
