Baseball Tops Bridgeport, 12-10

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated University of Bridgeport, 12-10, in a non-conference matchup at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Conn. With the win, Southern improves to 4-2 while the Knights drop to 2-3 on the season.

Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Cam O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) and Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) both drove in two runs each.

On the mound, Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) improved to 2-0 on the season while Joe Nemchek (Trumbull, Conn.) picked up his first career save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls offense exploded for six runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run double by O'Toole and a single by Redahan that scored two more runs.
  • After a four-run third inning by the Knights, Southern responded with a five-run fifth inning to take an 11-4 lead. The Owls opened the inning with a single from Redahan, a double by Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) before Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) singled home Redahan.
  • Diaz then singled to left-center to bring home DeMartino and Ferrett before Cloutier singled to score Jack Drewry. Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) then hit a ground ball to short to score Diaz.
  • After Bridgeport cut the Owls' lead to 11-8 in the sixth, Zambito scored on an error in the eighth inning.
  • Bridgeport threatened late with a home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth before manufacturing another run before Nemcheck pitched out of the inning.
NOTES
  • Redahan has now hit safely in his last three games. In that span, he is 6-for-11 (.545) with five runs scored and three RBI.
  • For the year, Redahan is hitting at a team-leading .450 clip (9-20) while also boasting an impressive 1.257 OPS and leading the team with 10 runs scored in six games.
  • Zambito, Ferrett and DeMartino have now hit in four-straight games to lead the Owls, while Zambito, Redahan and Drewry have reached base in all six games for Southern this year.
