Baseball Plays To 6-6 Tie Against Bridgeport

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University tied University of Bridgeport, 6-6, in a game called following the completion of the eighth inning due to darkness. With the tie, Southern goes to 4-2-1 while Bridgeport moves to 2-3-1.

Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Freshman Zach Bedryzcuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) also drove in two runs with a double in the sixth inning while Jack Drewry (North Haven, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern jumped out to an early lead when Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) walked to led-off the inning and stole second base. After moving to third on a ground ball to the right side of the infield by Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.), DeMartino singled to left-center field to score Zambito and give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
  • Bridgeport pushed its lead to 4-1 with two runs in the third and two more in the sixth.
  • In the seventh, Drewry doubled to left-center, dropping a deep drive at the base of the wall. John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) then singled to move Drewry to third before Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a line drive to center field to score Drewry. Zach Bedryzcuk then blasted a line drove off the top of the wall in left to score Spoto and Cloutier to tie the game at 4-4.
  • A long top half of the eighth inning resulted in two more runs for the Purple Knights as darkness set in. In the bottom half of the inning, DeMartino connected for his first home run of the season to pull the Owls within a run, 6-5. Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) hit a line drive through the left side of the infield before Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) came in to pinch run. Drewry followed with a single to move Diaz to second. Isaiah Likely then ran for Drewry before Cam O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) came in to hit for Spoto. O'Toole popped up before both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Diaz scored the game-tying run on a passed ball before Bridgeport retired the last Owl faced.
