Men's Basketball Falls In Quarterfinals Of Northeast 10 Conference Tournament

EASTON, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to Stonehill College, 86-71, at Merkert Gymnasium in Easton, Mass. in the quarterfinals of the Northeast 10 Conference Tournament. The Owls conclude the season with a record 16-11 overall, while the Skyhawks improve to 18-10 overall. 
 
Senior Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) recorded team-highs in points and rebounds with 16 and eight while shooting 7-10 from the field. Redshirt junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting, while freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) also recorded 13 points. Junior Greg Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

First Half
  • Stonehill scored the first eight points of the game. Bennett then started a 14-5 Southern run with a three-pointer, and C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) finished off the run with a go-ahead three-pointer of his own, to give Southern their first lead with 10:45 remaining. 
  • Stonehill was forced to call timeout, but immediately went on a 15-0 run to take a 28-14 lead. 
  • Jones made a three-pointer to momentarily stop the run, but Stonehill went on a 20-7 run right after to extend their lead to 48-24 with 1:48 remaining.
  • Southern scored the final five points of the half, on a Seaforth three-pointer and a Bennett layup, to trim the Stonehill lead to 48-29 heading into halftime. 

 
Second Half
  • Southern opened up the second half on an 18-6 run to trim the Stonehill lead to 54-47 with 12:50 remaining, highlighted by 10 points from Adams II.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets over the next minute, then Stonehill made three free throws to up their lead back to 10 at 61-51. Bennett scored on back-to-back possessions and Jones made two free throws to cut the Skyhawks lead down to five with 8:53 remaining. 
  • The Skyhawks then went on a 10-2 run to bring their lead back up to 74-61 with 3:15 remaining and held on for the win. 


Notes
  • Adams II scored in double-figures in 20 of his 23 games played this season and scored at least 15 points in 15 games.
  • Bennett ended the season with 102 assists, becoming the third freshman in program history with at least 100 assists in a season. He joins Mike Parenti, who had 175 during the 1988-89 season and Robbie Thompson, who had 111 during the 1995-96 season.
  • Jones shot 88.9 percent from the free throw line this season, the fourth best mark in program history. T.J. Trimboli holds the record with 91.2 percent in 1998-1999, while Isaiah McLeod (Cambridge, Mass.) shot 89.8 percent in 2019-19 and Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) shot 89.0 percent from the line during 2014-15. 
  • The Owls shot 50.0 percent (6-12) from the beyond the arc for the third game this season.
