Baseball Tipped By Queens, 13-4

FLUSHING, N.Y – The Southern Connecticut baseball team lost to Queens (N.Y.), 13-4, in a non-conference game played at Hennekens Stadium in Flushings, N.Y. With the loss, Southern drops to 4-3-1 on the season while Queens improves to 4-5.

The Owls offense was held to just six hits for the day, as six different players managed to hit safely. Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with a RBI double while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) managed a base hit to extend his hitting streak to six games. Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) also stole his team-leading 11th base of the season while extending his streak of consecutive games of reaching base to eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Queens was able to tag Southern starter Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) for four runs over five innings before Rodgers left the game with the Owls trailing, 4-0.
  • Southern cut into the Knights' lead with a two-run sixth inning. Cam O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch before Drewry doubled home Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) to pull the Owls within two runs of the lead, 4-2.
  • Queens answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning and then blew the game open with an eight-run seventh inning to take a 13-2 lead.
  • In the top of the eight, Peyton Farina (North Haven, Conn.) led-off with a pinch-hit single down the right field line before Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) worked a walk to put two runners on. Zach Bedryzcuk (Beacon Falls, Conn.) singled to load the bases, allowing Farina to score when Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Jared Smith (Orange, Conn.) then drew a walk to force Sullivan home and cap the Owls' scoring.
NOTES
  • Bedryczuk's single also marks the eighth-straight game in which he has reached base, tying Zambito for the team-lead.
  • Farina now has a hit in his last two appearances, as well as run scored in each.
  • Zambito now has three stolen bases in his last two games and has been successful in eight of his last nine attempts on his way to a team-best 11 stolen bases.
  • Owls freshman Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut on the mound, spinning the final 1 1/3 innings on the bump while holding the Knights scoreless on two hits.
