NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Former Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball standouts Tylon Smith and T.J. Trimboli were honored by D2 East Hoops with "Super 75" recognition for the point guard position, which ranks the top 15 players at each position among players over the last four decades.

The criteria and rankings set by Chris Granozio, who has covered Division II basketball in the East Region since 1982, are;
  1. Granozio must have seen the player in person at least once
  2. He must have played for a team that was competing in the East (formerly known as the New England and then the Northeast) Region at the time
  3. The player's career must have been completed by 2021
Smith was a superstar for the most accomplished Owls team in program history. As a junior during the 2013-2014, Smith helped lead the Owls to a 30-3 record, the most wins in program history, and an appearance in the Elite Eight, Southern's first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 1999-2000 season. During Southern's seven postseason games that season, he averaged 21.7 points per game, including 24.0 points per game during the NCAA Tournament. Smith set the Southern single-season assists record with 178 during the 2014-15 season, helping Southern to their second straight NCAA Tournament, holds the career program record with 528 assists. Smith's list of accolades includes All-American honors as a senior, two First-Team Northeast 10 All-Conference selections, and NE10 All-Rookie Team honors. Smith was also named MVP of the Conference Championship game against New Haven in 2014, as he scored 22 points on 7-12 shooting and going 3-5 from three-point range while dishing out seven assists without turning the ball over to power the Owls to their first NE10 title.

Trimboli was extraordinary for the Owls from 1996-2000, as he also led the Owls to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 1997 and in 2000. In his freshman year, he guided the Owls to an Elite Eight berth and was named Regional MVP as Southern finished the season 28-4. At the time, it was the most wins Southern's men's basketball program had ever won in a season, and remains as the second most wins in a season in program history today. Trimboli was also named to the NECC All-Rookie Team. During his sophomore and junior seasons, Trimboli earned First-Team All-NECC selections. In his senior year, Trimboli averaged 18.7 points per game on 47.2 percent shooting, leading the Owls to a 25-4 record and an NECC regular season and conference tournament title. He was an All-American selection and was named co-NECC Player of the Year. He ranks sixth all-time in points scored in program history, second in assists with 410, third in three-pointers made with 221, and tied for 11th, with his brother Bobby, in steals with 127.
