NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Former Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball All-American
Michael Mallory was honored by D2 East Hoops with "Super 75" recognition for the shooting guard position, which ranks the top 15 players at each position among players over the last four decades.
The criteria and rankings set by Chris Granozio, who has covered Division II basketball in the East Region since 1982, are;
- Granozio must have seen the player in person at least once
- He must have played for a team that was competing in the East (formerly known as the New England and then the Northeast) Region at the time
- The player's career must have been completed by 2021
Mallory was one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the East Region for the winningest four-year stretch in Southern program history. In addition to being the all-time leading point scorer (2,515) at Southern, he is also the all-time leader in field goals made (882) and three-pointers made (347). He ranks 28th all-time in Division II history in points scored, fourth in the East Region, and first in the Northeast 10 Conference. Mallory holds the single-game program point record with 47, breaking a 55-year old record on Jan. 30, 2016 against Bentley and set the single-game three-point field goal record in the same game, with 10. More than just a scorer, Mallory dished out 355 assists and recorded 150 steals, both top five in program history, and blocked 116 shots, sixth in program history. Mallory, along with his graduating class, finished with a program-record 94 wins and four NCAA Tournament appearances. As a freshman during the 2013-2014 year, Mallory provided a spark off the bench by averaging 15.8 points per game and shooting 44.2 percent from the field to help the Owls to a 30-3 record and an Elite Eight appearance. In 10 career NCAA Tournament games, Mallory averaged 19.9 points per game, including an astounding 42 points on 14-27 shooting to lead the Owls to a 109-98 win against No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire on March 11, 2017.
Individually, Mallory was an All-American selection in 2016 and 2017, became the first Southern player to win NE10 Conference and ECAC Rookie of the Year during the 2013-14 season, was a three-time NE10 All-Conference selection, including selected as a First-Team member as a junior and senior, 2016-17 ECAC Player of the Year, and a two-time All-Region selection. Mallory's list of records at Southern includes career points (2,515), field goals made (882), three-pointers made (347), games (126), points (720, 2017) in a season and three-pointers (95) in a season, and points (47) and three-point field goals made (10) in a game (Jan. 30, 2016 at Bentley).
