WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Kelsey Burr (Wallingford, Conn.) buried the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to lift the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team past the University of New Haven, 2-0 at Kathy Zolad Stadium. With the win, the Owls improve to 5-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the Northeast 10, while the Chargers fall to 4-9-1 overall and 1-9-0 in the NE10.
How It Happened
- The first half saw the Owls outshoot the Chargers 6-1, but the first 45 was a scoreless affair.
- In the 59th minute, Greta Brunello (Carisolo, Italy) was pulled down just inside the box and the center official signaled a penalty kick. Burr, in familiar territory, slotted her shot to the bottom right corner and broke the deadlock.
- In the 62nd minute, Emma McMurray (Middletown, Conn.) played a ball low to Nadine Hilkert (Baden-Württemberg, Germany), who narrowly got a shot off on the Chargers goalkeeper. A scramble in front ensued, and the ball popped out to the foot of McMurray, who buried it home for the Owls second goal.
- Graduate student Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) had a quiet night between the pipes with one save in the shutout victory.
