RINDGE, N.H. – Southern Connecticut State University rolled to a 43-24 win at Franklin Pierce in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Rindge, N.H. With the win, the Owls improve to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the NE10 while Franklin Pierce drops to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Tylon Papallo (Meriden, Conn.) made Owls' history as he became the first player in Southern Connecticut history to pass for a touchdown, run for a touchdown and also catch a touchdown. For the day, Papallo had four receptions for 127 yards including a 67-yard touchdown, while also running for a pair of touchdowns and passing to
Izaiah Sanders (Stamford, Conn.) for a score.
Sanders matched a career-best with nine catches for a season-best 124 yards and his second two-touchdown game of the season. Freshman quarterback
Marc Reali (Biddeford, Me.) completed 26 passes for 378 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively,
Robert Nunez (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led the Owls with nine tackles, while
Elijah Alexandre (Stratford, Conn.) and
Ben Eichman (Merrimack, N.H.) both tallied interceptions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Izaiah Sanders scored his first touchdown of the afternoon on an 8-yard reception from Marc Reali to put the Owls in front, 7-0.
- After the Ravens tied the game at 7-7, Szymon Gawlick converted from 29 yards to give the Owls a 10-7 lead.
- Franklin Pierce once-again tied the game on a 26-yard field goal, 10-10.
- From there, Southern scored three-straight unanswered touchdowns to take a 24-10 lead into halftime. Tylon Papallo scrambled out of the Wildcat formation for his first touchdown of the afternoon before passing to Sanders, again out of the Wildcat, for a 7-yard touchdown reception to give the Owls a two-touchdown lead, 24-10.
- Coming out of the half, Papallo capped off a six-play, 71-yard drive with an 11-yard run from under center to push the Owls' lead to 30-10 after a failed point-after conversion.
- Franklin Pierce broking the Owls' scoring streak when E.J. Burgess ran in a touchdown from nine yards to cut Southern's lead to 30-17.
- After a back-and-forth exchange of possession via turnovers, Franklin Pierce scored with just under nine minutes to play in the game to cut the Owls' lead to six points, 30-24.
- On the second play of the ensuing Owls' drive, Reali connected with Papallo on a 67-yard touchdown to push Southern's lead to 36-24. Southern added another score when Anthony Ligi punched one in from a yard out.
NOTES
- Southern's 24 first-half point against the Ravens are the most in a half since the Owls' matchup against Franklin Pierce in 2019 when Southern posted 35 points in the first game in the all-time series between the two teams.
- Papallo became the first Southern Connecticut player in program history to record a touchdown pass, a touchdown run and a touchdown catch in the same game.
- Papallo finished the day with six rushes for 23 yards and two touchdowns, three catches for 95 yards and a touchdown and also, one pass for a seven-yard touchdown.
- The last Southern player to rush for two touchdowns in a game was Jonmichael Bivona against New Haven on Oct. 19, 2019.
- Sanders' nine catches match his career-best which he posted against Franklin Pierce in 2019.
- Sanders posted his second two-touchdown performance of the season after also scoring twice against Saint Anselm on Sept. 17, 2021.
- Reali set career-bests in receptions (25), yards (344) and touchdown passes (2) in the Owls' win.
- Elijah Alexandre and Ben Eichman both recorded their first career interceptions in the game. Alexandre also broke up two additional passes, while Eichman also had an additional break-up.
- Southern has now intercepted a pass in four-straight games, totaling seven in that span.
- Southern's 36 points are the most in a game this season.
- For the second-straight game, first-year Owl Robert Nunez led Southern in tackles, with a career-best nine against the Ravens.
- Hasan Dominick continued his dominance with seven tackles.
- Ray Magliozzi (Burlington, Mass.) had the Owls' only sack on the day, which was also the first of his career.
- Szymon Gawlick (Newton, Mass.) was 1-for-1 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts.

The Owls will have a bye next weekend and return to action at Pace on Saturday, Nov. 6 a 12 p.m. The Owls return home for their final game of the season when they host Stonehill on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Jess Dow Field. Senior Day Festivities are scheduled to be held prior to the start of the game.
