NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Alex da Cunha (Norderstedt, Germany) scored his first career goal in overtime to defeat Southern New Hampshire, 2-1, on Senior Day on Oct. 30, 2021. With the win, Southern improves to 4-10-1 overall and 4-7-0 in the Northeast 10, while Southern New Hampshire falls to 9-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the NE10.

Juan Alava (Guayaquil, Ecuador), Juan Avila (Clinton, Conn.), Bailey Bassett (Andover, Conn.), Jhan Carlos Bermeo (Clinton, Conn.), Khaleed Dawkins (Shelton, Conn.), Johnny Foster (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), and
Aren Seeger (Naugatuck, Conn.) as part of Senior Day festivities. Seeger recorded eight saves during the win.
Scoring Plays
- After both teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first half, Lennox Strelow (Bremen, Germany) broke the ice with a goal in the 47th minute. Strelow found the back of the net after a corner kick to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
- SNHU was able to tie the game in the 72nd minute after they scored on a deflection on a corner kick.
- The game remained tied heading into overtime. After a free-kick opportunity in the first minute of extra time, da Cunha was in position to kick in a loose ball and score the game-winning goal.

- da Cunha's goal was his first goal of his career.
- da Cunha joins Santiago Slapak (Manuel Alberti, Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Leroy Best (Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) as freshmen to score game-winning goals for the Owls this season, with Best's also coming in overtime in Southern's last game on Oct. 27 against Bentley.
- Strelow's goal was also the first of his career.
- Seeger set a new season-high in saves with eight.
- Southern has won two consecutive overtime games for the first time since 2002, when they defeated Concordia, 1-0, and Bridgeport, 3-2, to begin the season.
- This was Southern's first win against Southern New Hampshire at Jess Dow Field since Sept. 22, 2007.

With the win, and Stonehill loss to Saint Michael's, Southern jumped to eighth place in the NE10 Conference standings with one game remaining. Southern trails New Haven, who play on Oct. 30 at 7:00 against Le Moyne, by one game, but hold the tie-breaker based off their head-to-head record. The top eight teams make the NE10 Tournament.
