Women's Soccer Upsets No. 7 Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – Sophomore Emma McMurray (Middletown, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal as the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team upset No. 7 nationally-ranked Saint Rose, 1-0, at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Owls improved to 6-7-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the Northeast 10, while Saint Rose was dealt its first loss and fell to 11-1-3 overall and 8-1-3 in the NE10.

How It Happened
  • The first half was a battle of tight defense and goalkeeping until a late half strike. In the 33rd minute Kaitlyn D'Amico (Middletown, Conn.) gathered the ball on the left side, dribbled through two Golden Knight defenders, and made a run deep before she slotted the ball over to a wide-open McMurray who chipped it into the left of the goalkeeper.
  • Saint Rose made a push in the second half and outshot the Owls 10-1, but graduate student Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) was solid between the pipes to help lead the Owls to an upset victory over the nationally-ranked Golden Knights.

Player Notes
  • Allie Smith recorded her sixth shutout of the season and fourth game with at least seven saves.
  • Emma McMurray picked up her second career goal.
  • Kaitlyn D'Amico recorded her first assist of the season and third in her career.

Team Notes
  • This was the first time the Owls have beaten Saint Rose since the 2004 season.
  • Southern Connecticut dealt Saint Rose its first loss of the season. This snaps the Golden Knights' regular season unbeaten streak that dates back to Oct. 26, 2019.
