Women's Soccer Advances To NE10 Championship With Penalty Kick Defeat Over Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. - The No. 8–seeded Southern Connecticut women's soccer team defeated No. 4 Assumption University in penalty kicks at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium to advance to the Northeast 10 Conference Championship. The Owls' record is now 7-7-4 overall, while the Greyhounds are 7-4-8 overall.

How It Happened

  • The first 45 saw both teams trade chances at both ends of the field, but the game was scoreless at the half.
  • After another scoreless half, the Owls and Greyhounds headed to two overtime periods before heading into penalty kicks.
  • The Owls' Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) and the Greyhounds Julia Walsh were solid for both teams in goal through 110 minutes of action.
  • Assumption found themselves in familiar territory as they advanced to the semifinals on penalty kicks against Franklin Pierce.

Round 1: The first round of shots saw Kelsey Burr (Wallingford, Conn.) loft the ball cleanly to the right side. Assumption's Julia Sferlazza took her turned but Allie Smith stopped her shot.
Round 2: Victoria Vera (Plainview, N.Y.) skied one too far, while the Greyhounds Haileigh Ward got one past Smith.
Round 3: Nadine Hilkert (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) went top left corner as Walsh was leaping right for the Owls second goal. Assumption's Ashley Wentzell missed on her opportunity.
Round 4: The Owls' Taylor Davis (Millis, Mass.) and Greyhounds Lila Kalooski couldn't convert in the fourth round.
Round 5: Georgia Teixeira (Bristol, R.I.) stepped up with the game on the line and buried it to the left side to send the Owls to their second straight championship appearance.

Notes

  • This is the second-straight season, with the exception of the off-year due to the pandemic, that the Owls are advancing to the NE10 Championship game.
  • This is also the third Conference Championship Game appearance for the Owls, as they also made it in 2000.
  • This is also the second-straight meeting between the Owls and Saint Rose in the NE10 Championship.
  • This is the first time the Owls won on penalty kicks in the postseason since 2014 when they defeated Adelphi in the ECAC Tournament.
  • Southern is the first 8-seed to make the NE10 Conference Championship game since Adelphi in 2012.
  • Allie Smith now has eight shutouts this season.
