Women's Basketball Rolls To 77-51 Win Against Bloomfield

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Bloomfield, 77-49, at James Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn. With the win, Southern improves to 1-1 overall while Bloomfield drops to 0-2 on the season.

Delaney Connors led all scorers with 19 points as well as 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Jessica Fressle totaled 15 points and nine rebounds with three assists after hitting on four-of-eight from the floor and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Zoe Amalbert posted 14 points, with seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  •        Bloomfield opened the game with a 6-0 run, before the Owls responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Trish Conroy and Zoe Amalbert.
  •        Both team's played back-and-forth, deadlocked at 9-9, before the Owls closed the first frame on a 10-3 run led by five points from Delaney Connors.
  •        The Owls never relinquished the lead for the rest of the game, heading into halftime with a 35-30 lead.
  •        Coming out of the half, the Owls opened with a 16-2 run, led by nine points from Jessica Fressle who hit on 3-for-4 from the floor during the run to push the Owls to a 41-32 lead with five minutes to play in the quarter.  
  •        The Owls ultimately outscored Bloomfield, 28-8 in the third, to take a 63-38 lead into the final frame.  
  •        The Owls narrowly outscored Bloomfield over the game's final 10 minutes, 14-11, with freshman guard Delaney Haines scoring four points to lead the Owls in her collegiate debut.
NOTES
  • Through the Owls first two games of the season, Fressle is averaging 19 pints and 12 rebounds, and has converted on 18-of-19 from the free-throw line. She also leads the team with nine offensive rebounds.
  • Fressle posted 23 points and 15 rebounds in the Owls' first game of the year and narrowly missed it against Bloomfield
  • Amalbert, a transfer to Southern from NYIT, is averaging 16 points per game as well as 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game.
  • Connors shrugged off a five-point performance in the Owls' season opener and exploded for a double-double in her second game. She is averaging 11 points and 8.0 rebounds through two games.
  • Patricia Conroy has converted on 6-of-11 from three-point range to lead the team in both categories while averaging 9.0 points.
  • First-year Owl Meagan Bianchi, a transfer from Bryant, is averaging 5.5 points in 11 minues per contest while Alexa Kellner is averaging the same on the strength of 3-of-6 shooting from long range in just 10 minutes per contest.
  • Freshman Katie Williamson, who has started both games for the Owls is averaging 6.5 rebounds per contest through her first two career games.
UP NEXT
  •        Southern Connecticut is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 17 when it travels to Orangeburg, N.J to take on Dominican in its only game of the week. The Owls open Northeast 10 Conference play at American International on Tuesday, Nov. 23 and will return home to host Holy Family on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 4 p.m. at the James Moore Field House.
