Southern Connecticut State University football featured seven played on the 2021 All-Northeast 10 Conference team, as announced by the NE10 on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021. The conference's coaches selected
Tylon Papallo,
Izaiah Sanders and
Szymon Gawlick to the NE10 Second Team Offense while Kwadir Delgado-McIntyre and
Sidney Jones were named to the NE10 Second Team Defense.
Shawn Martin and
Robert Nunez received NE10 All-Rookie honors.
Sanders finished the season second in the NE10 in receptions (48), fourth in yards (635) and ninth in yards per catch (13.2) while adding five touchdowns. Sanders had three 100-yard games, including a three-catch, 109-yard highlight-riddled game that included a 51-yard touchdown against Central Connecticut in the Owls' season opener, and followed with performances against American International, six catches for 108 yards, and Franklin Pierce, in which he recorded career-highs in catches (9) and yards (124) with two touchdowns. It was Sanders' second two-touchdown performance of the season after scoring twice against Saint Anselm, which saw the third-year Owl tally eight catches for 85 yards.
Papallo was close-behind Sanders with 561 yards on 28 catches. The duo made the Owls the only team in the NE10 to feature two wide receivers that averaged 60-or-more yards per game. Papallo was also one of two players in the conference to average 20 yards per catch and also finished with five touchdowns for the season. The highlight of his season came at Franklin Pierce when Papallo became the first player in SCSU history to throw a touchdown, catch a touchdown and run for a touchdown in one game. He followed performance with a touchdown run and a catch against Pace in the Owls' next game, to become the first player in program history to catch a touchdown and run for a touchdown in consecutive games. Papallo catch a touchdown pass in five of the nine games he started in while also totaling three rushing touchdowns for the year.
Gawlick earned NE10 Second Team honors after leading the conference in field goals, with 10. In the process, he became just the fourth Owls' kicker in program history to kick 10 field goals in a season, and finished tied for second in single-season tallies. Gawlick was 20-for-23 on extra-point attempts and finished the year tied for 10
th in total points with 50.
Delgado-McIntyre had finished the season ranked 16
th in the NE10 in total tackles (57), including 42 solo tackles. Delgado-McIntyre was one of six players in the NE10 with 40 solo tackles and also ranked in the top 20 in tackles per game (5.7). The Owls' graduate student was second on the team with six tackles for a loss and was one of seven players in the conference with three interceptions. He also broke-up five more passes, which ranked 11
th, and also forced one fumble. He finishes his Owls career with six career interceptions and 105 career tackles as well as 18 passes broken up.
Sidney Jones, also a graduate student in his fifth year at Southern Connecticut, bounced back from an season-ending injury in 2019 and solidified himself as one of the top defensive linemen in the conference. Jones, who was often avoided by opposing running backs at the line, totaled 24 tackles, including a career-best 4.5 for a loss and one sack.
Martin finished the season with 32 kick returns, for the second-most in a season in program history, while his 724 yards were also the second-most in program history. Martin was one of three players to compile 700-or-more return yards in the NE10 while his 22.6 yards per return was good for third in the conference. Martin's 80.4 yards per game ranked 13
th in the conference.
Nunez had one of the best seasons for a freshmen defensive player in the conference, tied for the Owls' lead with
Hasan Dominick with 64 tackles, which ranked 12
th. Nunez ranked second among NE10 rookies in tackles while also recording 4.5 tackles for loss including two sacks.Â
