MANCHESTER, N.H. - The No. 8-seeded Southern Connecticut women's soccer team upset the No. 1-seeded Southern New Hampshire, 2-1, at Penmen Stadium to advance to the Northeast 10 Conference Tournament Semifinals. The Owls improved to 7-7-3 overall, while the Penmen's record is now 13-3-1 overall.
After going down a goal in the first two and a half minutes of play, the Owls rattled off two unanswered goals in the second half to shock the top seed on the road.
How It Happened
- Alyssa Anderson put SNHU on top with the opening goal in the third minute of play.
- Southern Connecticut scored the equalizer in the 69th minute as junior Julia Casimiro (Prospect, Conn.) launched a ball off a set piece that found junior Julia Alicea (Columbia, Conn.) on the left post for the redirect in.
- In the 76th minute, graduate student Nadine Hilkert (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) earned a free kick after being fouled six yards outside the box. Hilkert teed up a shot to the top left corner beyond the reach of Penmen keeper Hannah Rose to put the Owls up by one with 14 minutes remaining in regulation.
- The Owls were able to hold off the Penmen attack for the remainder of the game to clinch a spot in the NE10 semifinals.
Notes
- Allie Smith made six saves in goal for Southern Connecticut.
- The Owls have redeemed themselves from the 2018 NE10 Quarterfinals against SNHU where the Penmen defeated SCSU, 2-1, in double overtime. SCSU now leads the all-time postseason series, 2-1.
- This was Nadine Hilkert's first career postseason goal and fifth goal of her career.
- Julia Alicea notched her third career goal and first in postseason play.
- SCSU earns its sixth appearance in the NE10 Semifinals. They have semifinal appearances in 2019, 2008, 2004, 2001, and 2000.
