NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost to University of New Haven, 75-64, on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021 at James Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls fall to 2-3 overall 0-2 in the Northeast 10, while the Chargers improve to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the NE10.
Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) had a team-high 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while
Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 12 points and shot 5-of-9 from the field.
Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.) scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and recorded three steals, and
Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
How It Happened
First Half
- Both offenses started off slow, but New Haven took an 11-4 lead after the first six-and-a-half minutes of play.
- Southern outscored New Haven 16-10 over the next five minutes and went 7-of-8 from the field to cut the lead to 21-20 with 9:32 remaining in the half. Mason Romano (Newington, Conn.) jump-started the Owls' offense with four points, including a dunk, and a blocked shot off the bench.
- New Haven responded by going on a 15-0 run that lasted seven minutes and 25 seconds to take a 36-20 lead. Penn made a layup off a feed from Bennett before Bennett drilled a straightaway three-pointer at the end of the half to make the score 38-25 before the intermission.
Second Half
- Southern's offense picked up to begin the second half, as they were able to cut New Haven's lead down to 10 with 14:29 remaining after a made layup by Penn.
- From there, Southern and New Haven played about even to end the game, with the Chargers outscoring the Owls 29-28 to close it out. New Haven took a 15-point lead with 6:53 remaining, but Southern was able to bring the lead down to 10 after a three-pointer by Seaforth with 4:07 left.
- Bennett and Coleman scored nine points each in the second half as Southern shot 15-for-29 from the field.
Notes
- Bennett has scored at least 10 points in five consecutive games to begin this season, and in nine straight games dating back to 2019-2020.
- Coleman has also scored at least 10 points in all five games to begin this season.
- Boissard scored in double-figures for the first time this season, and his seven rebounds were a new season-high. His three steals also tied a career-high, last done on Feb. 25, 2020 against Adelphi and Jan. 14, 2020 against Southern New Hampshire.
- Romano recorded a new career-high in points with six and shot 3-of-6 from the field, while also recording a block, two rebounds, and two assists.
- Penn set a new season-high in points with 11, his fourth double-digit point gae of his career.
