Women's Basketball Tops New Haven, 83-64

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut women's basketball team defeated the University of New Haven, 83-64, at Moore Field House. The Owls improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast 10, while the Chargers fell to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the NE10.

The Owls were led by graduate student Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) who had 26 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Graduate-student Patricia Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.) shot 75-percent from three-point range, which was good for 21 points. Senior Zoë Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) shot 50-percent from the field with 17 points, 10 assists, and two steals.

How It Happened
  • Southern came out hot to start the game, leading by as many as nine points. New Haven responded in the latter half of the quarter and finished with a 9-0 run to tie the game, 16-16.
  • New Haven took a brief lead at the beginning of the second quarter with a small 6-3 run that gave them a three-point lead. Fressle fired off seven unanswered points on her own to give the Owls a four-point lead midway through the quarter. The Chargers attempted to claw their way back into the game, but the Owls exploded for a 10-0 run in the last two and a half minutes. Southern entered halftime with a 13-point lead, their largest of the half.
  • Third quarter action had both squads trading shots and saw the Chargers cut the Owls deficit to single-digits. Southern pulled ahead and regained its double-digit lead thanks to four three-pointers in the third quarter. The Owls finished the quarter up by 14 points.
  • The final frame was back-and-forth to begin, as the Chargers sank two three-pointers and the Owls netted two layups. Southern expanded its lead with a 10-2 run midway through the quarter and led by as many as 23-points. New Haven finished the quarter outscoring the Owls 5-1, but Southern went on to capture a 19-point victory at home.

  • Southern defeated New Haven for the first time since 2018.
  • Jessica Fressle picked up her fourth double-double of the 2021 season with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Fressle has double-digit points in all six of the Owls' games this season. She also has two games with 20-plus points.
  • Zoë Amalbert has recorded double-digit points in all six of the Owls' games this season. She picked up her first double-double against UNH with 17 points and 10 assists.
  • Patricia Conroy hit the most three-pointers (6) in a game than any other player on the Owls' roster this season.
  • The Owls scored their highest point total of the season with 83 points. The last time they registered 80-or-more points in a game was on Nov. 10, 2019 against Bloomfield when they scored 100.
