Softball Sweeps Felician in 2021 Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After a 374 day hiatus, the Southern Connecticut State University softball squad swept Felician University, 10-2 (5 innings) and 4-2 in its 2021 season opener. With the sweep, the Owls begin the season 2-0, while Felician falls to 0-6.

Grad student Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) was a spitfire in today's outing. She went 6-for-7 with four RBI and three runs to help power the Owls to the two-game sweep. Graduate student Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) collected three runs and three stolen bases on the day.

Senior Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) collected her first win of the season in Game 1, while sophomore Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) notched her first collegiate win in the circle in Game 2.

Game 1: Southern Connecticut 10, Felician 2

  • Southern Connecticut exploded in the first two innings of play ignited by the bat of Cailey Botteon. She placed a ball over the shortstop to kick off the scoring frenzy and drove in Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.). Botteon then scored off the tag up.
  • In the next at bat, Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) ripped a single through the left side that scored Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.).
  • Botteon started off the second inning where she left off in the first by blasting a triple to right field that brought in Buscetto and Martinez.
  • Sam Scott (Windsor, Conn.) stepped to the plate and rocked her first collegiate double through the left side to drive in Botteon and DeRosa.
  • Lauryn Zubia (San Fernando, Calif.) expanded the Owls lead to nine with a single through the left side scoring Scott and Delaporta.
  • Felician's offense came out swinging in the fourth inning. Vienna Chierchia got the Golden Falcons on the board with a single to the shortstop. Krystina Lorch capped the scoring for Felician scoring on a fielder's choice.
  • The Owls capped off their forceful offense in the fifth inning with Botteon scoring on a Dumont walk.

Game 2: Southern Connecticut 4, Felician 2

  • Botteon kept her hot streak going in the second outing. In her first at bat, she notched a single driving in Buscetto to start the scoring.
  • DeRosa finished off the Owls second-inning push after she scored on a wild pitch.
  • DeRosa picked up another run in the third inning scoring on a Delaporta groundout that put the Owls up by three.
  • The fourth inning saw Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) score on the tag up to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.
  • Felician hopped on the board in the fifth inning off a two-run home run to left center field. The Golden Falcons comeback wasn't enough for the Owls stingy defense as Southern Connecticut went on to capture the 4-2 victory.

Notes

  • With three stolen bases against Felician, Sara Buscetto moves into third all-time in SCSU history in career stolen bases with 48 behind Brittany Bucko (64) and Megan Caporossi (51).
  • With the 4-2 victory in Game 2, Jessica Perucki captured her first collegiate win in the circle.
