Softball Splits Twin Bill Against Le Moyne

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad split a twin bill against Le Moyne College, including a 3-2 win and a 12-7 loss, in its first set of Northeast 10 Conference matches this season. The Owls move to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NE10, while Le Moyne moves to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the NE10.

Graduate student Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) went 4-for-8 on the day with five RBI, four stolen bases and one run. Junior Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) went 4-for-7 over two games including three doubles, one run and one RBI. Sophomore Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) went 3-for-4 in game two with two RBI.

Senior Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched a complete game in the Owls first outing of the day striking out five in 28 batters faced.

Game 1: Southern Connecticut 3, Le Moyne 2

  • The first two innings saw hitless and scoreless action between the two teams.
  • In the third inning, the Owls found themselves on the defense with bases loaded and only one out. Martinez battled through and struck out the final two batters to get the Owls out of a pinch unscathed.
  • Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) ripped a double down the left field line to get the Owls started in the third inning. Buscetto stepped to the plate and rocked a hard shot up the middle to score Petrella from second.
  • A two out RBI double to left field from Le Moyne's Victoria Catalano tied the game at one. Later in the inning a defensive error allowed the Dolphins to take a one run lead.
  • The Owls entered the seventh inning down by one. First year player Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) stepped to the plate for her first collegiate at bat and knocked a shot down the left field line, becoming the Owls game-tying run. Martinez dropped a shallow ball to center field moving Lange over to second base. The Owls inserted first year player Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) as a pinch runner for Martinez. With one out, Buscetto reached first on an error by the second baseman, loading the bases. After a wild pitch allowed Lange to score and tie the game, a scramble and miscommunication ensued and Roy capitalized on the opportunity, leading the Owls to a late game victory, 3-2.

Game 2: Le Moyne 12, Southern Connecticut 7

  • Botteon singled to third to get Southern started in the first inning. In the next at bat, DeRosa blasted a shot to left-center field, bringing Botteon home from first.
  • After a scoreless second inning, Le Moyne came out swinging in the third, scoring six runs on three hits.
  • Morgan Tuscano knocked in Angela Barresi in the bottom half of the third inning to cut the Dolphins lead to four, 6-2.
  • A Southern Connecticut error in the fourth inning allowed Le Moyne to pick up two more runs and expand their lead to four.
  • Buscetto picked up a big two RBI single up the middle in the fifth that scored Lauryn Zubia (San Fernando, Calif.) and Rachel Miller (Waterford, Conn.).
  • The Dolphins picked up four more runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead by eight.
  • SCSU picked up a run in the sixth inning after Tuscano singled up the middle.
  • Buscetto continued her solid game two play when she blasted a two-run homerun in the seventh inning bringing, the Owls within five.
  • Le Moyne's forceful offense in game two was too much to withstand for the Owls as the Dolphins went on to capture a 12-7 victory.

Notes

  • With four stolen bases against Le Moyne, Sara Buscetto surpassed Megan Caporossi (51) and moved into sole possession of second place all-time in SCSU history in career stolen bases with 52 behind Brittany Bucko (64). She now leads the NE10 in stolen bases with seven through the first four games of the season.
  • Rachel Miller, Emily Lange and Katrina Roy all made their collegiate debuts against Le Moyne. Miller came in relief in the circle, while Lange served as a pinch hitter and Roy as a pinch runner.
  • Jazmyn Martinez earned her second win of the season in game one. She is one of three pitchers in the NE10 to have two wins.
  • With a game one victory, the Owls earned their best team start (3-1) since the 2014 when they won their first five games.
