Baseball Drops Pair At Adelphi

Southern Connecticut State University baseball lost a pair of Northeast 10 Conference games at Adelphi, 19-11 and 6-2, in a doubleheader played in Garden City, N.Y. The Owls open the year at 0-2 overall and in conference play while Adelphi improves to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the NE10.

Game 1
Andrew Eng was 2-for-5 with a two-run double and a solo home run while Tony Zambito was 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Izaiah Walker was 2-for-3 with three RBI and also pitched a scoreless 8th inning.
  • After Zambito reached on a single in his first at-bat of the season, and stealing second, he scored after a double-play ball was mishandled and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead.
  • Adelphi's Tyler Becker keyed an eight-run bottom of the 2nd inning for the Panthers with two home runs in the inning. Becker led off the inning with a solo shot before connected on a two-run homer to give Adelphi a 8-1 lead.
  • In the 3rd inning, Southern answered with a three-run inning to cut Adelphi's lead to 8-4. Mike DeMartino as hit by a pitch before Mike Ferrett singled to right-center field. After Josh Wettemann entered the game as pinch runner for DeMartino, Jack Drewry worked a walk to load the bases. Izaiah Walker then drove in all three runs with a double.
  • After Adelphi pushed its lead to 15-4, the Owls loaded the bases in the top of the 7th before Zach Bedryczuk was hit by a pitch to force a run in. Adelphi responded with a four-run bottom of the inning to take a 19-5 lead.
  • In the top of the 8th, Andrew Eng, a transfer from Binghamton University, collected his first hit as an Owl with a solo home run to right-center field. In the 9th, After Walker stroked a one-out single, Adelphi's pitcher walked the next four batters he faced to force Walker and giving Eric Ross a RBI. Eng then followed with a two-run double to score Zambito and Bedryczuk before Kevin Lucey's sacrifice fly ball to center scored Ross to cut Adelphi's lead to eight runs, 19-11.
Game 2
Southern was held to just three hits in the nightcap, including a single by Jack Drewry, a double for Bedryczuk and Eng's second home run of the doubleheader.
  • Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when Tyler Becker singled through the right side of the infield to score Jack Ryan.
  • In the top of the 3rd, Eng connected for his second home run of the day with a two-run blast to left-center field that scored Bedryczuk to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
  • After the 1st, Owls' starter Zach Rodgers cruised through the 2nd and 3rd in order before a lead-off double in the 4th led to a one-out bases loaded jam, which he was able to navigate through to sneak out of the inning unscathed.
  • In the 5th, Rodgers once-again loaded the bases before a pinch-hit RBI single plated the tying run for the Panthers. They would add another run in the inning to take a 3-2 lead before scoring three more times in the 6th to take a 6-2 lead.
Notes
  • With two stolen bases in the first game, Tony Zambito now has 44 for his career.
  • Andrew Eng transferred to Southern Connecticut from Binghamton prior to the start of this season. He entered the Owls' season opener with three career home runs in three seasons with the Bearcats before homering in his first two games with the Owls.
  • For the day, Eng was 3-for-7 (.429) with two home runs and a team-leading five RBI.
  • Jack Drewry ended the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season on a six-game hitting streak; with a hit in each game today, he's now recorded a hit in eight consecutive games. He also reached base in all 10 games played last season, giving him 12 straight games to the start of his Southern Connecticut career of getting on base.
  • Izaiah Walker's three-run double in the first game was his first collegiate hit as well as the first RBI's of his career.
  • Dating back to last season, Walker has now pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his career.
  • Peyton Farina's two stolen bases in the second game were the first of his career.
  • Half of the Owls' 12 hits in the doubleheader went for extra bases with four doubles and two home runs.
  • Zach Bedryczuk worked three walks and a hit by pitch for a .625 on-base percentage in the doubleheader.
