Baseball Takes Home Opener Against Felician, 14-9

The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated Felician, 14-9, in the Owls' 2021 home opener at The Ballpark at SCSU. The Owls also pick up their first win of the season to improve to 1-2 while the Golden Falcons drop to 3-9 on the year.

Tony Zambito led the Owls attack with a 4-for-6 day with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Tyshaun Diaz was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Andrew Eng connected for his third home run in as many games, but it was Jack Drewry's RBI-single in the bottom of the 8th that drove in the Owls' go-ahead run.

How It Happened
  • Mike Martinez was hit by a pitch to lead-off the game and Nick Vincell walked. After both runners moved up a base, a ground ball to second by Sean Downey allowed Martinez to plate Felician's first run of the day.
  • In the 2nd inning, Joe Curcio walked to lead-off the inning and moved to second on an error by Szturma. He then went to third on a passed ball and scored when Andrew Flori reached on an error.
  • In the 3rd, the Owls broke through to take the lead with a three-run inning. Josh Wettemann walked to lead-off the inning before Tony Zambito singled. Zach Bedryczuk then bunted both runners over before Andrew Eng connected for his third home run in as many games to give the Owls a 3-2 lead.
  • In the 4th, Felician's Edwin Tavares reached on an error before Curcio bunted him over. Florio then singled to score Tavares and tie the game at 3-3.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Peyton Farina worked a walk to lead-off the inning before Tyshaun Diaz doubled to center field to score Farina and give the Owls a 4-3 lead.
  • Wettemann then bunted Diaz over to third, who then scored on a single by Zambito to give the Owls a two-run lead, 5-3.
  • After Zambito stole second and then third, he scored on an overthrow to third base to give Southern a 6-3 lead.
  • Felician got one back in the top of the 7th when Martinez poked a one-out home run to center field to push Felician to within two runs at 6-4.
  • In the bottom of the 7th, Izaiah Walker walked and stole second base before Farina also worked a walk. Diaz then singled to center to score Walker and give the Owls a 7-4 lead.
  • In the 8th, Curcio drew a one-out walk and stole second before Michael Florides walked to put two runners on. After Tommy Hughes came in to pitch for the Owls, Curcio and Florides moved up on a wild pitch before Andrew Florides stroked a double to center field to score both runners and cut the Owls' lead to 7-6. Garrett Allo then delivered a pinch-hit double to left field to score Andrew Florides and tie the game at 7-7.
  • In the 8th, the Owls' offense exploded for seven runs to take a 14-7 lead, keyed by a RBI single by Jack Drewry that scored Andrew Eng with the go-ahead run.
  • Billy Sullivan also blasted a base-clearing triple before Zambito ripped his fourth hit of the game scored Sullivan to give the Owls a 14-7 lead.
  • Felician made a late run when Levin Aguila and Edwin Tavares homered back-to-back with one out in the ninth to trim the Owls' lead to 14-9.
