Baseball Sweeps NE10 Doubleheader Against Pace

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader against Pace, 8-4 and 10-4, at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls are now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE10 while Pace drops to 7-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) collected five hits in the doubleheader and drove in three runs while Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) collected three hits while scoring four runs and driving in four more. Zambito also record three stolen bases on the day. Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) also had four hits on the day.

Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) and Pete Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) both picked up wins in relief while Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) picked up a save in the first game of the twin bill.

GAME 1: SCSU 8, Pace 4
Tyshaun Diaz was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Zach Bedryczuk was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. Andrew Eng (Ridewood, N.J.) homered to become the first player in SCSU Baseball history to hit a home run in four consecutive games.
  • Southern took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Jack Drewry singled home Zach Bedryczuk with the game's first run.
  • In the 4th, the Owls made it 3-0 when Peyton Farina doubled over the head of Pace's left fielder to score Drewery before Josh Wetteman singled through the left side of the infield to score Farina.
  • After Pace's Matt Bass drove in two runs with a triple to pull within a run, a fielding error on a ground ball by Dean DePreta allowed Bass to score to tie the game at 3-3.
  • In the 5th, Eng belted his fourth home run in as many games, with Bedryczuk on base, to give the Owls a 5-3 lead.
  • Pace's Harrison Treble homered in the top of the 6th to make it 5-4, before Zambito drove in two runs in the bottom half of the inning and then scoring on a single by Bedryczuk to give Southern an 8-4 lead.
  • Lost in the Owls' eight-run outing was a solid start by Owls' southpaw Joe Nemchek. Pace threatened in their first at-bat, with two runners on scoring position, before Nemchek pitched out of the jam. After a lead-off single in the top of the 2nd, Nemchek retired the next 10 batters he faced before Bass' two-run triple knocked him out of the game in the 5th inning, with two outs.
  • Brandon White pitched the final four outs to pick up the save. White entered the game with two outs and the tying run at the plate in the 8th inning before holding the Setters scoreless in the 9th.
Game 2: SCSU 10, Pace 4
The Owls capitalized on some timely hitting and six Pace errors to post a 10-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader. At the dish, Zambito was 2-for-4 with two RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. He delivered a single in the 5th inning of the scheduled seven-inning game that scored two runs and gave the Owls the lead. Walker was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Billly Sullivan also collected two hits.
  • Southern posted two runs in the 1st inning on a RBI single by Drewry and sacrifice fly by Farina that scored Chad Fedeli.
  • Pace answered with a run in the 3rd inning before Farina doubled home Drewry in the bottom half of the inning, followed by a double from Walker that scored Farina to give Southern a 4-1 lead.
  • Pace pushed across three runs in the 4th to cut the Owls' lead to 4-3. In the 5th, Miles Kelley singled home Matt Almonte to tie the game at 4-4.
  • In the 5th, Zambito singled through a drawn-in infield and scored Walker and Sullivan to give the Owls a 6-4 lead. The Owls scored twice more in the inning, including a RBI single by Drewry and Zambito scoring on an error.
  • In the 6th, Fedeli reached on an error for the second straight at-bat, scoring Zambito and Walker to give the Owls the six-run victory.
  • On the mound, freshman southpaw Steve Phillips made his Owls' debut. Phillips pitched well through 3 2/3, scattering six hits while giving up three runs and striking out three.
  • Tommy Hughes held Pace to a single run while striking out three over 1 1/3 before Rodgers pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win.
NOTES
  • Eng saw his home run streak end at four games to start his Owls' career. He is the first player to homer in four-straight games in program history. The last Owls' player to hit a home run in three-straight games was Jason Oliverio in 2000 against New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University) in a doubleheader followed by a home run against Mercy in the Owls' next game.
  • Eng leads the team in home runs (4) and RBI (10).
  • Walker is off to a hot start to the season, currently batting .533 (8-15) with four doubles, four RBI and five runs scored. He has recorded multiple hits in three of the five games he's appeared in and is currently riding a three-game hitting streak.
  • Drewry owns the Owls' longest hitting streak with a hit in all five games this season. His 5-for-7 showing against Pace bumps his season average to .444 (8-18).
  • Dating back to last season, Drewry owns an 11-game hitting streak and a 15-game streak of safely reaching base.
  • Zambito's three stolen bases give him 47 for his career.
  • Zambito was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader and is now 7-for-15 in his last three games with six runs scored and six RBI.
  • Farina has now hit safely in three-straight games, scoring five runs and driving in four more in the span.
  • Southern is now 3-0 at home this season, and 5-0-1 over the last two seasons with last loss at The Ballpark at SCSU coming on May 2, 2019.
  • Southern is hitting .314 (50-159) through five games with 16 extra-base hits, while also drawing 28 walks for a .450 on-base percentage.
UP NEXT
Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 14 when it travels to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi in one of the two games that were postponed on Mar. 28. The Owls return home next weekend to host American International College for a pair of doubleheaders on Apr. 17-18. With the Owls' doubleheader against Pace, originally scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 10 but postponed due to rain, being played on Wednesday, Apr. 21 at 1 p.m.
