NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost both ends of a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader to American International, 6-5 and 15-1, at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the two losses, SCSU drops to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the NE10 while American International improves to 6-10 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) collected three hits in the doubleheader and also stole on base while
Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) drove in a run in each game.
Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the first game while freshman Josh Wetteman (Guilford, Conn.) also collected two hits in Game 1 with one RBI.
Spencer Fox (Manchester, Conn.) hurled three hitless, scoreless innings in relief.
Game 1: AIC 6, SCSU 5
- After AIC scored twice in its first at-bat, Zambito led off the bottom half of the inning with a double down the left field line. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) then singled to drive in Zambito and cut the Yellow Jackets' lead in half.
- AIC pushed its lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the 3rd inning. In the 5th, Izaiah Walker (Yonkers, N.Y.) was hit by a pitched before Tyshaun Diaz () blasted a ball to the right-center field gap for a triple that drove in Walker and cut AIC's lead to 4-2.
- In the 7th, Walker was hit by a pitch to start the inning before stealing second. Diaz then lined a single up the middle to score Walker and make the score 4-3. After Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) reached on a throwing error by the Yellow Jackets' shortstop, and Diaz moved to third, Josh Wetteman (Guilford, Conn.) singled over the second baseman's head to score Diaz and tie the game at 4-4.
- Zambito then loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch before Andrew Eng's (Ridgewood, N.J.) deep fly ball to center scored Diaz to give the Owls a 5-4 lead.
- In the top of the 8th, Owls reliever Peter Phillips retired the first two batters he faced before hitting Michael Cruz with a pitch. Angel Mendez then doubled to right field to score Cruz with the tying run. Phillips wild pitch to Matt Krause not only walked him, but allowed Mendez to move to third.
- Tommy Hughes then relieved Phillips. An attempted pick-off play at first ended with Mendez stealing home on the vacant home plate to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.
Game 2: AIC 15, SCSU 1
- Southern's lone run of the second game came in the third inning when Eng drove in Fedeli to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
- A five-run 4th inning by AIC, capped by a grand slam by Dalton Quinn, gave the Yellow Jackets the lead. They went on to tack on a run in the 5th, eight in the 6th and another in the 7th.
NOTES
- With a 3-for-6 day, Zambito ups his batting average to .429 (12-28) while he now leads the team with 12 hits and nine runs scored. Zambito also boasts a .515 on-base percentage.
- With a RBI in both games, Eng leads the team with 12 for the year and has driven in a run in six of the Owls' seven games.
- Wetteman is now 3-for-7 in his last two games with a RBI in both games.
- Fedeli has scored a run in four-straight games.
- Fox has now pitched six-consecutive innings without allowing a run. He's second behind Tommy Hughes (4) with three appearances and dropped his ERA to 3.68 with today's outing.
- Hughes spun 1 1/3 innings on the mound without giving up a hit or a run.
