Baseball Splits Doubleheader With AIC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against American International College, with the Yellow Jackets taking the first game, 4-2, before the Owls won the final game of the series, 3-1. After the weekend, Southern is now 4-5 overall and 3-5 in the NE10 while AIC goes to 7-11 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

Billy Sullivan (Madison, Conn.) collected three hits in the doubleheader and also drove in the game-tying run and scored the go-ahead run in the second. Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) had three hits in the doubleheader. Jeffrey Walsh (Glastonbury, Conn.) picked up the win in the second game after tossing two shutout innings while Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) pitched a perfect 9th inning for the save.

GAME 1: AIC 4, SCSU 2
  • AIC strung together a couple hits, but it was an error on the second batter of the game that proved costly as the Yellow Jackets took an early 3-0 lead.
  • The Owls got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Zambito led off with a double before moving to third on a single by Sullivan. Andrew Eng (Riverwood, N.J.) then hit a groundball to second to score Zambito.
  • In the 3rd, Zambito hit a line drive to right field that dropped in for a hit, but the speedy lead-off man hustled out a double. Sullivan dropped down a bunt for a single that moved Zambito to third before Eng drove in Zambito with the Owls' second run on a ground-out to first.
  • AIC pushed its lead back to two runs, for a final of 4-2, on a solo home run by Chad LaVelle.
  • Joe Nemchek (Trumbull, Conn.) took the loss despite pitching well as the Owls' southpaw's lone earned run came on LaVelle's home run in the 4th.
  • After the three-run 1st, Nemchek allowed just one baserunner through the 2nd and 3rd innings.
  • Spencer Fox (Manchester, Conn.) relieved Nemchek and pitched two scoreless innings while allowing one hit.
  • Peter Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) also pitched a scoreless 6th inning before Hughes made his first appearance of the day with a perfect 2/3 of an inning.
GAME 2: SCSU 3, AIC 1
  • AIC put up a run in the 3rd inning when Matt Costanza reached on a two-out single before going to third on a double by Matt Krause. Andrew Clark then singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Costanza, but Izaiah Walker came up throwing from left field and saved a run when he gunned down Krause at the plate to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the 3rd, freshman Josh Wettemann (Guilford, Conn.) led off the inning with a triple to right-center field. After Zambito was hit by a pitch, Sullivan hit a groundball to second that scored Wettemann to tie the game.
  • AIC threatened again in the 4th on a two-out triple by Dalton Quinn, but Owls' starter Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) got Michael Cruz to ground-out the inning.
  • Rodgers then had a 1-2-3 5th inning, before pitching around a two-out single in the 6th. Rodgers finished the day with one run allowed on seven hits over six innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
  • Walsh came on in the top of the 7th for Rodgers, and gave up a double to Quinn to start the inning before Wettemann threw him out attempting to steal third. Walsh then walked the next two batters before retiring the side.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Wettemann walked to lead-off the inning before Zambito bunted him over. Sullivan then singled to left-center to score Wetteman with the go-ahead run. Sullivan then took second and third on a failed pick-off attempt by AIC reliever Ethan Teixeria. Eng drew a six-pitch walk before Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) drove in Sullivan with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Owls a 3-1 lead.
  • Walsh retired the Yellow Jackets in order in the 8th before Hughes made his second appearance of the day, and third of the series. Cam Defeo reached on an error before Hughes struck out Quinn looking. He then got Cruz to ground into a game-ending double play.
NOTES
  • Zambito extended his team-leading hitting streak to seven games with a 4-for-6 day in the twin bill, while also stroking two doubles and scoring both of the Owls' runs in the first game.
  • For the series, Zambito was 7-for-12 with three doubles and three runs scored. He brings his season average to a team-best .471 (16-34) while also leading the team in hits (16) and runs (11) as well as boasting a .550 on-base percentage.
  • Eng drove in four runs in the series to bring his season total to a team-best 14 in nine games played.
  • Wettemann was 3-for-6 in two games in the series with a double, triple, one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Sullivan collected four hits in the series while also driving in three runs, and picked up an outfield assist in his first game in right field for the Owls. He was 3-for-8 on Sunday and has now hit safely in five of his six games played this year.
  • Hughes pitched well in relief against the Yellow Jackets, allowing one baserunner in three innings pitched while also picking up his first career save in the Owls' 3-1 win. He is now 2-0 with a save while leading the team with six appearances, all out of the bullpen.

  • Nemchek now has a team-high 10 strikeouts on the year. The Owls starter has now pitched well-enough to win in both starts as only three of his seven runs allowed have been earned.
  • Rodgers' six innings pitched are the most for an Owls' starter this season and he has just one run scored against him in his last eight innings pitched. Rodgers now leads the team with a 2.13 ERA.
