Buscetto Breaks Record, Softball Dominates AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad swept American International College, 13-0 (5 innings) and 10-5. The Owls move to 12-8 overall and 9-7 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets move to 8-14 overall and 7-10 in the NE10.

Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) broke the Southern Connecticut program career stolen bases record with her 65th steal in the first inning of game two. 

Game One Highlights
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched a complete game and struck out two on route to her fifth victory of the season.
  • Buscetto went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
  • Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
  • Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored.
  • Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
  • Rachel Miller (Waterford, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Game Two Highlights
  • Jessica Perucki collected her sixth win with four strikeouts in 35 batters faced. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate including a home run with two RBI and one run.
  • Sara Buscetto went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and one stolen base.
  • Lauryn Zubia (San Fernando, Calif.) went 3-for-4.
  • Rachel Miller went 2-for-4 including a double with two runs scored and one RBI. 


Game 1: Southern Connecticut 13, American International 0
  • The Owls struck first to open the game with Perucki singling home Dumont.
  • Miller kicked off the second inning with a RBI single that scored Angela Barresi (Windsor, Conn.). A sacrifice fly by Dumont allowed Miller to score and extend the Owls lead to three. Delaporta kept the scoring rolling with a two RBI double to bring home Buscetto and Botteon.
  • The offense unleashed in the fourth inning as the Owls, who already had five unanswered runs, scored eight more in a scoring frenzy.
  • Botteon got it started for SCSU with a RBI single, scoring Miller. Delaporta kept her solid offense performance going with another two RBI shot to bring home Buscetto and Botteon. Perucki stepped to the plate a blasted a two RBI double to bring home Dumont and Delaporta. Southern brought the lineup around as Miller took another crack at the plate as she notched a single, scoring Perucki. Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) scored on a sacrifice fly in the next at bat and Karina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) earned a walk with the bases loaded to score Barresi.

Game 2: Southern Connecticut 10, American International 5
  • Buscetto scored the Owls first run in game two, as she crossed the plate on a groundout. 
  • Perucki notched her third home run of the season in the second inning to put the Owls up by two. AIC responded in the bottom half of the inning as they scored on an error.
  • Miller scored in the third inning on a fielder's choice, while Buscetto scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Yellow Jackets picked up a run in the third and a run in fourth inning to come within one of the Owls' lead.
  • Southern Connecticut kept their momentum going from game one as Buscetto blasted a two-run double to give the Owls a two-run lead once again. AIC counterattacked in the bottom half of the inning but only mustered one run from the Owls stingy defense.
  • A breakout inning came in the seventh as SCSU scored four runs off two hits. Perucki picked up a single to score Roy, Delaporta scored on a sacrifice fly, Scotto scored on a Miller single, and Tuscano scored on a Buscetto walk. The Yellow Jackets collected a run in the bottom half of the inning, but it wasn't enough to withstand the Owls explosive offense.

Game Notes
  • Sara Buscetto collected her 20th stolen base of the season against AIC on April 18.  Buscetto now sits first all-time in SCSU history in career stolen bases as she surpassed Brittany Bucko's record of 64 from 2007-2010.
  • With 20 stolen bases so far this season, Buscetto is now six stolen bases away from tying her own single-season stolen bases record (26). 
  • Jessica Perucki won her fourth-straight and sixth game this season, while also collecting a home run in three of her last four games.
  • The Owls have collected double digit hits in each of their last four games. The last time the program accomplished this feat was April 23, 2014 - April 25, 2014 in doubleheaders again Stonehill and American International College.
  • SCSU notched a season high 13 RBI in game two against AIC. The last time the Owls had double digit RBI was in the first game of the season when they had 10 against Felician.
  • The Owls 13 runs in game two were a season high. The last time the squad scored 13 runs in a game in a 13-12 win over St. Thomas Aquinas was on March 14, 2018. 

On Deck
The Owls will travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. on Thursday, April 22 for a conference doubleheader against Pace University.
