WEST HAVEN, Conn. – In the first postseason game in history for Southern Connecticut State University Lacrosse, the No. 5 seed Owls fell to No. 4 seed University of New Haven, 14-6, at Kathy Zolad Stadium on April 30, 2021.
Six different Southern player scored the six goals for the Owls;
Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.),
Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.),
Steph Seymour (North Branford, Conn.),
Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.),
Kelly Jagodzinski (Stamford, Conn.), and
Jettke Gray (Easton, Conn.). Takacs, Seymour, and
Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) also recorded one assist each. Jagodzinski and Shaw scooped up a career-high four ground balls, while
Morgan Chase (Windsor, Conn.) and
Cece Khan (Riverhead, N.Y.) scooped up a career-high three ground balls.
First Half
- New Haven took the lead in the opening minute with a goal, but Southern's defense stayed solid for the entire half. Takacs tied the game at 1-1 with 18:47 remaining with the Owls' first ever postseason goal.
- New Haven scored the next three goals over a nine-minute span to take a 4-1 lead.
- Rowe scored as the halftime clock expired to cut New Haven's lead in half heading into the break, 4-2.
Second Half
- The Chargers scored the first two goals of the half to take a 6-2 lead, but Seymour responded with a goal on a free-position shot.
- New Haven then extended their lead to 12-3 with 13:59 remaining before Takacs and Feinberg connected on a goal.
- Southern and New Haven traded two goals each in the final 10 minutes, with Southern's coming from Jagodzinski on a pass from Seymour and Gray scoring off a pass from Shaw. New Haven held on for a 14-6 win.
Notes
- Takacs has recorded a point in 14 consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season.
- Takacs recorded an assist in seven consecutive games, and every game she played in this season. She is the first player since at least 2008 to have an assist in at least seven consecutive games.
- Takacs' assist today was the 26th of her career, fifth most in program history.
- Rowe has recorded a point in all 31 career games played and has scored seven goals in her last four games.
- Molly Kelly (Colchester, Conn.) has caused at least one turnover in all eight games this season, the longest streak in a single-season since Carolynn Keal caused at least one turnover in 11 straight games from March 17-April 21, 2018.
- Seymour recorded her 22nd career assist, tying her with Grace Martha for the sixth most in program history.
- Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) saved 10 shots, and now has 474 career saves.
- Southern had at least four players scoop up at least three ground balls in a game for the first time since April 6, 2019, when thy Owls had five players do so.
- Southern had two players scoop up at least four ground balls in a game for the first time since April 2, 2019, when Morton and Brianna Grande did so against Adelphi.
