Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y.  – Southern Connecticut baseball split a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader against Le Moyne with the Owls taking the first game, 6-3, before the Dolphins responded with an 8-0 win in the second game. Southern goes to 7-8 overall and 6-8 in the NE10 while Le Moyne moves to 12-6 overall and in NE10 play.

Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, Conn.) recorded four hits on the afternoon, including a 3-for-4 showing in the second game of the doubleheader. In the first game, Zambito walked three times and was 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored. He followed with a 3-for-4 showing in the second game.

On the mound, Spencer Fox (Manchester, Conn.) improved to 2-0 on the season after holding Le Moyne hitless across 2 1/3 innings while giving up one run. Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) converted his third save of the season with a perfect 9th inning.

GAME 1
  • Le Moyne scored the game's first run in the 2nd inning, but Nemchek was able to navigate around a two-out single and escape a bases-loaded jam to hold the Dolphins to the single run.
  • In the 4th inning, Andrew Eng reached on a throwing error by the pitcher before Mike Ferrett singled for the Owls' first hit of the game. After Jack Drewry worked his second walk of the game to load the bases. Izaiah Walker then drove the ball to deep center field to score Eng and tie the game at 1-1. Ferrett then scored on a wild pitch to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
  • After the Dolphins tied the game at 2-2 after Nemchek walked a runner in, Spencer Fox came on to pitch in relief, retiring the only batter he faced.
  • In the 5th, Tony Zambito walked to lead off the inning before stealing second. After Peyton Farina walked, Eng doubled to right field to score Zambito and give the Owls a 3-2 lead. Another wild pitch allowed Farina to score as Eng moved to third, who scored on a ground ball up the middle by Drewry to give Southern a 5-2 lead.
  • After Le Moyne tacked on another run to pull within the lead, 5-3, the Owls pushed their lead back to three runs when Zambito scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 9th.
  • In the 9th, Tommy Hughes retired the Dolphins in order to end the game.

GAME 2
  • Le Moyne got on the board early, scoring a run in the 1st and three runs in the 2nd to take a four-run lead. The Dolphins tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning.
  • The Owls strung together a few hits, but never had more than a runner on base in any inning until the 5th.
  • On the mound, freshman Mike Szturma took the loss while Brendan Ebert held Le Moyne to just two runs in his fourth appearance of the season.

NOTES
  • Fox ran his scoreless-innings streak to 15 2/3 before giving up the run to the Dolphins. Fox entered the game ranked fifth in the NE10 in ERA, and was the only relief pitcher in the top 10.
  • Including his outing against the Dolphins, Fox now sports a 2.20 ERA to go along with his 2-0 record and has scattered four earned runs on eight hits over 16 1/3 innings in six appearances while striking out 14.
  • Joe Nemchek got the start in Game 1 and pitched out of a jam in each inning of work. Nemchek gave up just three hits and struck out five batters, but it was a season-high seven walks that proved to be his undoing. Nemchek now leads the Owls with 17 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings this season.
  • Hughes owns an eight-inning scoreless streak in holding his opposition scoreless over his last five appearances while also converting a save in his last three appearances. His eight appearances lead the team and the Owls own a 5-3 mark when he pitches.
  • Zambito has now hit safely in 13-straight games this season, and reached base in 26 consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season.
  • For the year, the Owls' second baseman is hitting .500 (28-56) while leading the team in hits (28), runs (17), stolen bases (13) on-base percentage (.588) and OPS (1.159) as well as multiple-hit games (9).
  • With an RBI in the first game, Andrew Eng pushed his team-best total to 21 for the year. He's also scored 14 runs for the year, including eight in his last six games.
  • Peter Phillips (Simsbury, Conn.) logged two innings out of the pen in the first game, holding Le Moyne scoreless on one hit.
