Baseball Splits With Le Moyne, Clinches 5th Seed In Upcoming NE10 Tournament

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader against Le Moyne, dropping the first game, 7-5, before responding with a 6-0 win in the second game. Southern finishes the regular reason at 8-9 overall and 7-9 in the NE10 while Le Moyne goes to 13-7 overall and in NE10 play.

Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 4-for-8 with two home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored. Eng homered in each game to bring his season total to seven. Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 3-for-7 with three stolen bases and three runs scored. Peyton Farina (North Haven, Conn.) had a hit in each game and drove in three runs in the twin bill. Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) was 4-for-5 in the doubleheader, with a 3-for-3 showing in the second game with a RBI double.

On the mound, freshman southpaw Steve Phillips (Watertown, Conn.) spun a gem on the mound in the second game as he hurled a one-hitter while holding the Dolphins scoreless and striking out seven over six innings of work. The win was the first-year Owls' first of his career, while he also logged season-bests in innings pitched and strikeouts.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
The win in the second game proved to be costly for Pace, who dropped four games to Adelphi over the weekend, as the Owls improved to 7-9 in NE10 play for a winning percentage of .4375, just percentage points ahead of Pace's .429 (9-12). As such, the Owls clinch the fifth-seed in the upcoming NE10 Tournament and will play at American International on Tuesday, May 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Zambito singled to lead-off the game, setting the stage for Andrew Eng to club his team-leading sixth home run of the season to give the Owls and early 2-0 lead.
  • Le Moyne tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The Dolphins increased their lead to give runs with a three-run 4th inning and led 7-2.
  • In the 5th, Izaiah Walker led off the inning with a single before Kevin Lucey walked and Chad Fedeli singled to load the bases. After an uncharacteristic strikeout by Zambito, Peyton Farina delivered a two-out single to right center to score Walker and Lucey and cut Le Moyne's lead to three runs, 7-4.
  • In the 6th, Fedeli walked with one out before Zambito bunted for a single to put runners on first and second. Eng then ripped a single through the right side of the infield to score Fedeli and cut Le Moyne's lead to 7-5.
  • With runners on the corners, Eng stole second base to put the tying run on second base, but Le Moyne was able to pitch out of the late threat from the Owls.
GAME 2
  • In the 4th inning, Fedeli roped a one-out single to right field followed by a walk by Zambito to put two runners on. After both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Eng lined a two-out single to right field to score both runners and give Southern the early 2-0 lead.
  • Mike Ferrett then followed with a double down the right field line that scored Eng before Jack Drewry drove Ferrett home as the Owls took a 4-0 lead.
  • On the mound, Steve Phillips held Le Moyne hitless through the first four innings before Le Moyne's Jeff Wilson led-off the 5th with a double. The hit also ended a run of eight-straight batters retired by Rodgers.
  • In the 7th, Peyton Farina walked to lead-off the inning before Eng connected for his second home run of the afternoon to give the Owls a 6-0 lead.
  • Phillips continued to deal, retiring the final six batters he faced after Wilson's double in the 5th.
  • In the 8th, Kevin Lucey drew a one-out walk before Fedeli got ahold of one and drove it off the wall in left center for a double, moving Lucey to third.
  • After Zambito walked a four-pitch walk, Farina sent a towering drive to center field to score Lucey and give Southern a 7-0 lead.
  • Jeffrey Walsh (Glastonbury, Conn.) slammed the door on the Le Moyne offense after holding the Dolphins hitless over the final three innings to record the save.
NOTES
  • Andrew Eng's seven home runs are the most in a single-season for the Owls since Ryan Geffert hit 12 in 2012.
  • Phillips win is the first of his career as he improves to 1-1. The last freshman pitcher to throw a shutout was Nate Carney, who spun nine innings of scoreless ball in a 10-0 win against St. Rose on Apr. 2, 2017.
  • It was 22 games since the Owls' last shutout, dating back to Feb. 21, 2020 when they defeated Mercy, 5-0. The Owls last shutout of a conference opponent came against New Haven, 17-0, on Apr. 16, 2019.
  • Walsh's save was just his second appearance of the season, with his first being two innings of scoreless work in a win against American International. For the year, Walsh boasts a 0.00 ERA in five innings of work with one hit allowed.
  • With a hit in each game, Zambito has now hit safely in 15-straight games this season, and has reached base in 28 consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season. Zambito's on-base streak is the longest since Tyler Criscuolo reached base in 26-straight games during the 2019 season.
