Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Shuts Out Saint Michael's, 3-0, In Northeast 10 Conference Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated Saint Michael's, 3-0, in the opening game of Northeast 10 Conference action to grab their first win of the season. The Owls improves to 1-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the NE10, while the Purple Knights fall to 3-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the NE10. 

Juan Alava (Guayaquil, Ecuador), Jalen Jean (West Hempstead, N.Y.), and Leroy Best (Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) all scored goals for the Owls, while Jean and Arnold Signell (Lidingö, Sweden) both recorded an assist. In goal, Bailey Bassett recorded eight saves for his second shutout of the season.

How It Happened 
First Half
  • Alava and Jean made a strong opening statement during the first 10 minutes of action. Alava scored in the sixth minute of play off a feed from Jalen Jean, then in the eighth minute, Jean scored on a pass from Signell to give the Owls a two goal advantage for the rest of the first half.
  • Bassett recorded three saves during the first half of play. 
Second Half
  • In the 63rd minute, Best scored on a breakaway to give Southern a 3-0 lead. 
  • Bassett recorded five more saves in the second half, which included a flurry of saves in the 64th minute. 
 

Notes
  • Jean and Best both scored their first collegiate goals of their careers, with Best's coming in his college debut. 
  • Best became the first player to score a goal in their first career game at Southern since Louis Greenway Tambini did so on Sept. 3, 2015 against Dominican. 
  • Alava's goal was his first of the season and first in an Owls' uniform. He previously scored three goals in two seasons playing at Nassau Community College.
  • Bassett's eight saves were a new season high, and was one off equaling his career high of nine done against Saint Anselm on Oct. 26, 2018. 
  • Bassett has now recorded at least five saves in four of the five games played this season.
  • Bassett recorded his second shut out of the season (also done against Bridgeport on Sept. 8) and sixth of his career. 
  • Southern's three goals scored were a new season high. 
  • Jean and Best became the first freshman duo to both record a goal in a game since Devante Teixeira and Jan-Malte Thesenvitz did so on Oct. 1, 2016 against Saint Anselm. 
  • Jean became the first Southern freshman to record a goal and an assist in the same game since Chae Brangman did so on Nov. 4, 2014 against Franklin Pierce.
