WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to New Haven, 38-9, in a Northeast 10 Conference game at Dellacamera Field in West Haven, Conn. With the loss, Southern falls to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NE10 while New Haven improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Szymon Gawlick (Newton, Mass.) was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts to lead the Owls. On offense,
Joe Bernard (Nashua, N.H.) completed 27 passes for 265 and freshman running back
Diante Wilson (Union, N.J.), making his first career start, piled up 75 yards on 12 carries.
Ryan Soules (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) totaled 79 yards on four catches while
Izaiah Sanders (Stamford, Conn.) led the team in catches (7) while posting 77 yards.
On defense,
Hasan Dominick (Jersey City, N.J.) led the Owls with 10 tackles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern led for most of the first quarter on the strength of a pair of field goals by Gawlick. The first-year Owl completed an 11-play, 50-yard drive with a 34-yard field before also connecting from 43 yards to give Southern a 6-0 lead.
- New Haven responded with a 70-yard touchdown pass by Connor Degenhardt to Javon Turner to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead. UNH took a 10-6 into halftime after Briant DeFelice converted on a 22-yard field goal.
- Coming out of the half, UNH's Shamar Logan scored from five yards to push the Chargers' lead to 17-6. Gawlick was called on again and drilled home a 24-yard field goal to pull the Owls within striking distance at 17-9.
- UNH held the Owls scoreless after that, posting a five-yard touchdown pass by Degenhardt to Kevin Foelsch before throwing the home run ball to Dev Holmes for a 93-yard touchdown. The Chargers final score of the day came on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Holmes to give New Haven the 38-9 lead.

- Gawlick is now 5-for-5 for the year on field goal attempts, with his 43-yard field goal against the Chargers standing as the longest of the season.
- Gawlick's 43-year field goal was the longest at Southern Connecticut since Jeffrey Groth kicked on the same distance on Nov. 1, 2014 against LIU Post.
- Soules' four catches and 79 yards are both career highs.
- Through four games, Sanders now has a team-leading 21 receptions for 301 yards and three touchdowns.
- Diante Wilson posted season-highs in carries (12) and yards (75) for a 6.3 per carry average. Wilson also had a 23-yard run in the game. Ezequiel Johnson also had six carries for 35 yards, including a 14-yard run, for a 5.8 yard per carry average.
