Men's Soccer Battles Adelphi Hard In Overtime Loss

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team fell to Adelphi in overtime, 2-1, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021 at Motamed Field. With the loss, the Owls fall to 1-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the NE10, while Adelphi improves to 4-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the NE10. 

Southern took an early first half lead when Alex da Cunha (Norderstedt, Germany) connected with Juan Alava (Guayaquil, Ecuador) in the 16th minute for the Owls' lone goal. Bailey Bassett (Andover, Conn.) recorded seven saves in the game.

Adelphi scored the equalizing goal off a penalty kick in the 64th minute, then scored the golden goal in the 96th minute. 

Notes
  • Alava's goal was his second in an Owls' uniform. He previously scored against Saint Michael's on Sept. 18, 2021. Before arriving at Southern, he scored three goals in two seasons played at Nassau Community College. 
  • Alava tied Leroy Best (Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) for the most goals by a Southern player this season.
  • da Cunha's assist was the first of his collegiate career. 
  • Southern has assisted on five of their six goals this season. 
  • Bassett's seven saves was one off his season-high of eight, done on Sept. 18, 2021 against Saint Michael's.
  • This was Southern's second overtime game this season, with the other coming in a 0-0 draw to Bridgeport on Sept. 8.
