The Southern Connecticut State University men's track and field team will compete in their fourth meet of the season, and second home meet, as they host the William Sutherland III Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022 at James Moore Field House. Southern will be competing against student-athletes from Bentley, Fitchburg State, Franklin Piece, New Haven, Post, Saint Rose, and Southern New Hampshire.
The meet is named in honor of Bill Sutherland, who was a coach at Southern for over 25 years, and excelled in the discus throw before graduating in 1973. He was also named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Regional Assistant Coach of the Year eight times.

SCSU Spectator Policy
- In working towards the goal of ensuring a normal competition schedule for its student-athletes, SCSU Athletics has decided to prohibit spectators from attending events at the James Moore Field House and Hutchinson Natatorium until further notice.
- University and athletic department officials will continue to monitor any changes to public health guidelines and adjust accordingly.
Notable 2021 Performances
Yale Season Opener
- In the 60-meter dash, Nigel Green (Shirley, N.Y.) finished in third place with a personal-best time of 6.89.
- Ramsley Exantus (Stratford, Conn.) finished in first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.25.
- In the 800-meter run, Marquis Whyte (New London, Conn.) finished in first place with a personal-best time of 1:57.41.
- The 4x400-meter relay team of Exantus, Hunter Dale (Storrs, Conn.), Eli Henry (Stratford, Conn.), and Green finished in first place with a time of 3:14.00.
- In the pole vault Nate Llanos (Danbury, Conn.) finished in a tie for first place with a mark of 4.60.
- Cameron Belton (Baltic, Conn.) finished in second place in the shot put with a throw of 15.74 meters.
Sharon-Colyear Danville Season Opener
- Green broke his own mark and set a new NCAA Division II indoor 300-meter dash all-time record with a time of 33.16.
- Henry came in second overall in the 300-meter dash with a time of 33.45.
- Terrell Patterson (Waterbury, Conn.) finished in 17th place in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:14.52, while Chris LeBeau (Bristol, Conn.) finished in 21st place with a time of 8:19.55. Patterson's time was the third fastest in program history, while Patterson's was the fourth fastest, and both are NCAA provisional qualifying times.
- Jake Mattei (Bethany, Conn.) finished with a time of 14:32.45 in the 5000-meter run, the fourth fastest time in program history.
Art Kidish Elm City Challenge
- Naji Middleton (Bloomfield, Conn.) finished in first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.59, while Joshua Lanzieri (Seymour, Conn.) finished in second place with a time of 22.87 in this collegiate debut.
- Middleton also finished in third place in the 55-meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.42.
- In the 800-meter run, Marquis Whyte (New London, Conn.) finished in first place with a time of 2:00.69.
- Llanos finished in first place in the pole vault with a mark of 4.40 meters and Oliver Hayes (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished in second place with a mark of 4.25 meters
- Lanzieri finished in first place in the long jump with a leap of 6.93 meters.
- Harling finished in first place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.66 meters.
- Gary Robinson Jr. (Montclair, N.J.) finished in first place in the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 16.24 meters.
- Peter Fuller (Canton, Conn.) finished in second place in the high jump with a mark of 2.01 meters.
- Natanael Barbosa Torres (Willimantic, Conn.) finished in second place in the shot put with a mark of 15.49 meters.
Northeast 10 Weekly Honors
Week 2
- Green was named NE10 Track Athlete of the Week after competing at the Yale Season Opener. He became the first SCSU men's student-athlete to be named NE10 Track Athlete of the Week in back-to-back weeks.
- The 4x400-meter relay team of Exantus, Dale, Henry and Green were named NE10 Relay Team of the Week after competing at the Yale Season Opener.
- Llanos was named to the weekly honor roll after after competing at the Yale Season Opener.
Week 1
- Green was named Track Athlete of the Week after competing at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
- Robinson Jr. was named Field Athlete of the Week after competing at the Art Kidish Elm City Challenge.
