MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost to Southern New Hampshire, 75-63, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Stan Spirou Field House. With the loss, the Owls fall to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in the NE10, while the Penmen improve to 10-6 overall and 6-5 in the NE10.
Four Southern players scored in double-figures, with
Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) leading the way with 14 points and six assists.
Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while
Jamaal Waters (Hartford, Conn.) scored 11 points off the bench and shot 4-of-5 from the field.
Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, and
Logan Bagshaw (Cumberland, Maine) turned in a solid performance off the bench with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting and made both of his three-point attempts.
How It Happened
First Half
- SNHU got off to a fast start, as they went up 17-6 run during the first six minutes of action.
- Penn and Bagshaw were able to cut the lead down to six after a layup and a made three-pointer, but an 8-0 run by the Penmen opened up a 25-11 lead, their largest of the first half.
- SNHU would maintain a 14-point lead until the 5:06 mark before Southern mounted a comeback in the closing minutes. Southern went on a 10-2 run to bring the score to 35-29, as Waters scored half the points during the stretch and Bagshaw knocked down his second three-pointer to cap it off. SNHU would regain control to end the half and scored six of the final 10 points and took a 41-13 lead into halftime.
- Bennett led Southern in scoring through the first 20 minutes with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, while Penn and Bagshaw added six points each.
Second Half
- Coleman came out of halftime on fire, as he scored seven of Southern's first nine second half points as the Owls were able to cut SNHU's lead to a single possession early.
- Southern was able to battle hard deep into the second half, as SNHU's lead was never more than seven and Southern trailed just 57-53 with 8:05 remaining.
- Southern's defense was a factor in the second half, with the Owls holding SNHU to 4-of-14 from the field and forced four turnovers during a nine minute stretch.
- SNHU quickly responded with a 10-1 burst to take a 13-point lead with 3:50 remaining. Southern scored five straight points to bring the lead back down to eight at the 2:09 mark, but the Penmen made all six of their free throw attempts down the stretch to secure a double-digit win.

- Waters has recorded four field goals made in three consecutive, and is averaging 10 points per game over that span while shooting 54.5 percent from the field.
