Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short Against #16 SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut women's basketball team fell to No. 16 nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire, 70-64, at the Stan Spirou Field House. With the loss, the Owls fell to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the Northeast 10, while the Penmen improved to 13-4 overall and 7-3 in the NE10.

Seniors Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) and Zoë Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) led the way for Southern Connecticut with 16 points each. Connors added six rebounds, and a pair of steals and assists, while Amalbert recorded three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. First year player Delaney Haines (Portland, Me.) recorded a career-high 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field. Haines and graduate student Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) were both perfect from the free throw line with Haines going 3-3 and Fressle going 5-5.

How It Happened
  • First quarter action saw both squads trading baskets before Southern New Hampshire pulled ahead with an 11-4 run and took an 11-point lead. Southern Connecticut collected five points off a pair of free throws from Fressle and a three-pointer from Haines to come within six points. The Penmen went on to finish the first frame with a 12-point lead.
  • Southern New Hampshire began the second quarter with a 9-2 run and expanded their lead to 17. After the Owls notched back-to-back baskets, the Penmen outscored SCSU 11-6 in the remaining minutes of the frame. SNHU led by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, but the Penmen went into halftime with a 12 -point lead.
  • SNHU picked up four early points to go up 14 points before the Owls rolled with three-straight three pointers from Connors, Amalbert, and Jillian Martin (Orange, Conn.) to cut the Penmen lead to five. SNHU countered with an 11-5 run and expanded their lead to 11 points to end the third.
  • The Owls started the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the Penmen lead to single-digits. After the Penmen grabbed three free throws, the Owls countered with a 6-0 run that brought them within four for the first time since the first frame. Both sides traded baskets in the final three minutes of the game, but SCSU's comeback fell short as SNHU went on to win by six.

  • Delaney Haines recorded a career-high 13 points against Southern New Hampshire. Her previous career-high of four points was against Bloomfield on Nov. 14, 2021.
  • Jillian Martin had a career-high five points against Southern New Hampshire. Her previous career-high of two points came against Georgian Court on Nov. 13, 2021.
