Men's Basketball Battles Adelphi Hard In Road Defeat

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost to Adelphi, 83-71, on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022 at the Center for Recreation and Sport. With the loss, the Owls fall to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast 10, while the Panthers improve to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the NE10.

Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds. Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) had 14 points and seven assists, while Alex Lin (Hillsdale, N.J.) had 12 points and Aaron Russell (Bowie, Md.) had 11 points. Elmin Redzepagic (Wolcott, Conn.) had a career-game in his first start, as he grabbed 13 rebounds and scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting. 

How It Happened 
First Half
  • Both teams came out of the gates hot with 13 points each, with Southern shooting 6-of-10 to start the game and Adelphi going 5-of-8 during the first six minutes. Russell made a three-pointer and Redzepagic and Evan Gutowski (Trumbull, Conn.) both made jumpers as Southern scored seven of the next nine points to take a 20-15 lead with 11:19 remaining. 
  • Adelphi answered by going on an 8-0 run to take a 23-20 lead, and held a 25-23 lead with 8:03 left in the half. Both offenses played nearly even to end the half. Southern held a lead or tie from the 6:45 mark after a Lin three-pointer until Adelphi took a 38-35 lead with 50 seconds remaining, which the Panthers would take into halftime. 
  • Lin led the Owls with eight first-half points, while Bennett and Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) both had six each. Southern out-rebounded the Panthers 19-13 in the first half, and grabbed five offensive rebounds compared to Adelphi's zero. 


Second Half
  • Adelphi kept their three-point lead for the first six minutes of the half before Penn tied the game with a made corner three-pointer. 
  • Penn then gave Southern a 50-48 lead on a made layup with 13:05 remaining, and the Owls held a 53-52 lead with 8:41 remaining after a free throw by Bennett. Adelphi scored the next five points and took a four-point lead, but Bennett made a three-pointer with 7:41 left to cut Southern's deficit to one. 
  • Adelphi went on a 22-9 run that lasted over six minutes to take a 79-65 lead with 1:26 left, and secured a 12-point win.
  • Penn scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half while going 5-for-6 from the field, and Southern shot 14-for-27 (51.85 percent) in the second half. 



Notes
  • Penn set new career-highs in points with 16 and field goals made with six. His previous career-high in points was 14 on Nov. 20, 2018 against University of the Sciences, while he previously made five field goals in a game three times, last on Dec. 7, 2021 against Saint Rose. 
  • Redzepagic's career-game included new bests in points scored with eight, field goals made with three, and rebounds with 13. He previously entered today's game with seven points scored, three field goals made, and six total rebounds.
  • Redzepagic's 13 rebounds were also a game-high, and tied for the most by a Southern player this season. Penn also had 13 against Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 14, 2021.
  • Lin, a transfer from Mercer County Community College, recorded a new high in points scored in an Owls uniform with his 12. He also tied his personal-highs with Southern in field goals made with four, last done on Dec., 19, 2021 against Holy Family and Dec. 12, 2021 against Lincoln and three-pointers made with three, also done against Lincoln.
  • Lin has made multiple three-pointers in three straight games, and has made at least three of them in two of his last three games played, going 8-for-16 from beyond-the-arc over that span. 
  • Gutowski also recorded a career-high four points and three rebounds while shooting 2-of-3 from the field in 15 minutes. 
  • James, in his collegiate debut, scored six points while making two of his five three-point attempts. 
  • Bennett has scored at least 10 points in nine of Southern's 10 games this season.
  • Russell recorded at least 10 points scored for the fourth time in his career.
