Jalen Jean Scores Game Winner As SCSU Men's Soccer Tops Assumption, 3-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Jalen Jean (West Hempstead, N.Y.) scored twice as the Southern Connecticut men's soccer team defeated Assumption, 3-2, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, Southern improved to 7-3-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the NE10 while Assumption dropped to 5-3-3 overall and 3-1-3 in conference play.

Assumption scored early and then tied the game late, but in the end a pair of second-half goals by Jalen Jean proved to be the difference as Southern handed the Greyhounds their first conference loss of the season. The Owls won their third-straight game and remain undefeated (3-0-1) in their last four games.

Assumption leading goal-scoring Gustaf Vilgot Albert scored in the 17th minute of play to give the Greyhounds an early lead, which they held to halftime. In the second half, the Owls drew a foul outside of the box where Karim Said took a free kick. Said sent the ball low, through traffic, and on-goal where it found the opposite corner to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 77th minute, Jean converted on his first shot of the season to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Cristian Sayers (Sorrento, Australia) started the play when he cut off an Assumption pass in the Owls' defensive zone and sent the ball upfield to Hideki Morales (Bethel, Conn.) in the midfield. Morales then one-touched the ball to the left wing where a streaking Raffaele Ciarleglio (Branford, Conn.) picked it up and carried it the rest of the way. As he maneuvered through the box, drawing a pair of defenders, Ciarleglio sent the pass wide to Jean who blasted a shot off the far post to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

With just under eight minutes to play, Assumption's Johannes Sundgot tied the game again with his third goal of the season. With the ball tied up in the closing minutes, it looked bleak for the Owls who would have to settle for a tie. With 30 seconds to play, Khaleed Dawkins (Shelton, Conn.) inbounded the ball to Morales, who centered a pass to Zachary Tuccitto (Clinton, Conn.) at the top of the box.  An Assumption player knocked down Tuccitto's shot with the ball trickled to his left to Jean. Jean made a move around a defender and then punched the ball past a charging goalkeeper to score the game-winner with 17 seconds to go.

Southern returns to action when it travels to Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 15 to face the Penmen at Ouellete Stadium at 7 p.m.
