SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Georgian Court In Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball opened the 2022-23 season with a 70-55 win against Georgian Court in a non-conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The Owls open the year at 1-0 while the Lions open the year at 0-1.

Zoe Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) had a team-high 17 points to go along with six assists and four rebounds. Amalbert shrugged off a slow start to scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Ashley Evans (Londonderry, N.H.) made her Owls debut, after transferring from Lafayette prior to the start of the season, and post 12 points while Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

Georgian Court led through the first quarter, 15-14, led by Erika Aspajo's seven points in the first quarter. Southern spread the scoring around as six different Owls found the scoresheet in the first frame.

In the second quarter, Delaney Haines (Portland, Me.) opened the quarter with a three-pointer from in front of the Owls' bench to give Southern the lead. Connors had a solid second quarter with seven points to lead the Owls to a 30-26 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Southern used a 12-0 run to open the quarter and take a 42-26 lead. Evans knocked down three huge shots to lead the way, while Haines also converted on her second three-point attempt. Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) also buried a huge three halfway through the quarter that put the Owls on top, 42-26.

Leading by 12 to start the fourth quarter, 53-41, Amalbert scored the Owls first seven points of the final frame to give Southern a 61-45 lead, before the Owls outscored the Lions, 9-5, down the stretch.
Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when it hosts Goldey Beacom at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Fieldhouse.
