SCSU Women's Basketball Holds Off Goldey-Beacom In 66-58 Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball held off a late charge by Goldey-Beacom to defeat the Lightning, 66-58, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Owls sophomore Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) scored a career-best 20 points to lead Southern while Zoe Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) had 17 points. Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) totaled nine points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Williamson split her points over two halves scoring 10 in each frame while Amalbert totaled 15 in the first half as she hit on 6-of-7 from the floor to pace the Owls out of the gate. As a team, the Owls shot just under 50% from the floor in the first half, but it was enough to take a 38-29 lead into the break.

The second half saw Southern build a 14-point cushion over the first two minutes of the third quarter behind Isabella Santoro's lay-up and free throw after a foul and a jumper by Connors. Santoro was making her Southern Connecticut debut after transferring to the Owls from Stonehill prior to the start of the year.

Despite the Owls' lead midway through the quarter, Golden-Beacom tied the game with a 14-0 run, 43-43, with 4:32 to play in the third. From there, both teams traded baskets before heading to the final quarter with the Owls clinging to a 47-46 lead.

In the fourth, Southern hit on seven of their first eight shots of the quarter to take a 63-55 lead, with Williamson dropping in eight points in the run. Connors scored off the fast break, and then converted on a pair of free throws to cap the win for the Owls.

Through the Owls' first two games, Amalbert is averaging 17 points, five assists and 3.5 rebounds while Williamson is second with 13.5 points while shooting 59.1% from the floor. Connors checks in with 10.5 points per game as well as a team-leading eight rebounds and five assists. Delaney Haines (Portland, Me.) with a two three-pointers in each game leads the Owls with four.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 19 when it hosts Southern New Hampshire at 1:30 p.m. for its Northeast 10 Conference opener at James Moore Field House.
