SCSU Women's Baskeball Falls To Southern New Hampshire, 58-55

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to Southern New Hampshire, 58-55, in the Owls' Northeast 10 Conference opener at James Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls' first of the season, drop to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Penman improve to 2-1 overall and open NE10 play at 1-0.

Zoe Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) had a team-leading 13 points, including nine to close the third quarter, while Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) had five points and nine rebounds. Isabella Santoro had her break-out game since making her season debut earlier in the week with eight points while Delaney Haines (Portland, Me.) had a season-best eight points and five rebounds. Renza Milner (Carlsbad, Calif.) had a season-high four points as well as two blocks off the bench while Katie Williams (Dublin, Ireland) totaled eight points, two steals and two blocks.

The first quarter saw a game of runs as Southern New Hampshire jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. From there, Southern outscored the Penmen, 11-0, over the final 4:35 of the first frame with five different players scoring. It was Delaney Haines' three-pointer with 1:14 to go before the first break that tied it at 9-9. Southern extended their run to 17-0 as they took a 19-9 lead at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter.
Playing back-and-forth in the second quarter, Southern held onto its 10-point lead as they led 24-14 with five to play before halftime. It was SNHU who made the late push, outscoring Southern Connecticut, 11-6, over the remainder of the quarter as the Owls took a 30-25 lead into halftime.

Southern New Hampshire continued to claw its way back into the game, eventually tying it at 34-34 with 6:28 to go in the third quarter. The third quarter saw SNHU outscore Southern, 21-8, as Jess Knight and Ariana Koivisto combined for 12 points, as they took a 46-40 lead with 2:26 to go in the third frame. From there, Southern retaliated with a 10-4 that saw Amalbert score nine of the Owls' points as they tied the game to head into the final quarter.

In the fourth, back-to-back three-pointers gave Southern New Hampshire a 54-48 lead, but a free throw from Isabella Santoro, followed by a jumper by Katie Williamson and a long three by Haines tied it again, 54-54.  

Southern returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when its hosts Dominican at 7 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
