SCSU Women's Basketball Downs Caldwell, 70-50

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball cruised to a 70-50 win against Caldwell in a non-conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, Southern improved to 4-1 on the season while Caldwell dropped to 2-4.

Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as well as three blocks. Zoe Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) led four Owls' scorers with 12 points to go along with a team-best seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) had 11 points while Delaney Haines (Portland, Me.) finished with 10. Renza Milner (Carlsbad, Calif.) had a career game with seven points and nine rebounds as well as two steals.

Southern and Caldwell were even through the first quarter, with the Owls holding a 13-12 edge. The second quarter saw the game tied, 17-17, two minutes into the quarter before Southern used a 6-0 run to take a 23-17 lead and hold off a late charge by the Cougars to head into the break with a 26-21 lead. Ashley Evans and Williamson both scored four points to lead the Owls into the break while Haines' three-pointer with 10 seconds before the break giving the Owls the final push.

Southern doubled-up Caldwell, 22-11, over the first six minutes of the second half to take a commanding 48-32 lead as Connors and Milner both scored five points each with Amalbert and Isabella Santoro combining to seven. The Owls hit on 8-of-13 on the run and 3-of-5 from three-point range to create the separation from Caldwell, who were only able to get off seven shots in the first six minutes against the Owls.

Leading 52-36 to start the fourth quarter, the Owls pushed their lead to 19 points, 61-42, with 6:25 to play with a three-pointer by Amalbert and four points from Connors to lead the way. The Owls ultimately outscored the Cougars, 18-14, in the final quarter after limiting Caldwell to 3-of-14 shooting down the stretch.

Southern's 70 points match their season-high that they reached against Georgian Court in the 2022 opener while their 20-point victory is their largest of the season. It was also the Owls' largest score differential since they defeated Saint Anselm, 105-69, on Feb. 6, 2022. Southern's 47 rebounds, seven three-points and nine steals were all season-highs while Williamson's 14 rebounds were also a season-high for the Owls.
