SCSU Men's Basketball Cruises To 96-72 Win Against Saint Rose

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball rolled to a 96-72 win against Saint Rose in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the NE10 while Saint Rose dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) recorded his first career double-double, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds as well as four assists. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) scored a game-high 20 points with six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Silvera also converted on 4-of-6 from three-point range and 8-of-14 from the floor. Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) had a game-high eight assists to go-along with 11 points. Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) finished with 15 points and four assists while Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Southern used one of its best shooting halves of the season to take a 47-31 lead at the end of the first half. The Owls shot 55.9% (19-34) from the floor including 6-of-13 from three-point range. The second half was just as impressive as Southern shot 50% (19-38) from the field including 4-of-11 from three-point range. For the game, the Owls shot 52.8% (38-72) from the floor. The Owls hit season-highs in points (98), field goals (38), three-pointers (10) and had a season-low six turnovers in the game.

Most notable of all stats is the Owls' 29 assists on 38 field goals, which stands as the third-most in a game in program history, tying the mark set against American International on Dec. 6, 1990. It was the most assists in a single game since Southern dished out 30 against Bridgeport in 1998.

The Owls used an early run to jump out to a 21-10 lead with Coleman and Sean James connecting from long range on three-straight trips down the floor. The Owls then used a 16-6 lead to take a 34-16 lead with just under seven minutes to go. From there, the teams played even before heading into the break with the Owls holding a 16-point lead.

Coming out of the break, Southern used a 14-4 run in the first five minutes of the half to take a 61-35 lead. The Owls took its largest lead of the game, 78-45, with seven minutes to play. Saint Rose used a 15-6 run to get within 24 points, 84-60, with 4:36 to go but the Owls were able to hold on for the win. Logan Bagshaw (Cumberland, Me.) provided six of the Owls' final 10 points while Leo Chaikin (South Hero, Vt.) had six points and three rebounds off the bench. Kazell Stewart (East Hartford, Conn.) finished with nine points and four rebounds.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 17 when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Holy Family at 3 p.m. before following with another road game at Bloomfield on Monday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m. Southern returns home on Thursday, Dec. 29 to host Mercy at 3:30 p.m. at James Moore Fieldhouse.
