SCSU Women’s Basketball Falls to Jefferson, 55-43

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to Jefferson, 55-43, in a non-conference matchup in Philadelphia, Pa. The loss drops the Owls to 6-3 on the season while Jefferson improves to 10-1 overall.

Isabella Santoro (Durham, Conn.) led the Owls with 17 points. Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) led the Owls in rebounds collecting nine during the match and finished with eight points and one steal. Delaney Haines (Portland, Me.) finished with nine points, going 3-of-5 in three point range. 

Southern Connecticut led 15-12 in the first quarter, before the Jefferson slimmed the gap during the second quarter to take a slight lead over the Owls, 26-25. The Owls were outscored in the third quarter, 15-12, giving the Rams a two-basket edge to end the quarter, 41-37. The final quarter sealed the deal where the Owls ultimately fell 55-43, scoring six points while the Rams outshot them with 14 points.

Three three-point conversions were made by the Owls in the first quarter to give them a boost over the Rams. Santoro converted two, and Haines converted one in the last minute of the quarter. Haines led Southern with nine points after the first 20 minutes, while Santoro followed closely behind with eight, and Williamson with six and five rebounds. The Owls forced Jefferson into seven turnovers in the first half, on fours steals with two being from Zoë Amalbert. The Owls had an advantage over the Rams until 1:12 mark until Southern fell one point shy of Jefferson on a layup to finish the half, 26-25.

The third quarter began with a battle between both teams before Jefferson took the lead, 35-32, on a three-pointer by Emily Keehfuss with 2:58 left in the quarter. The Owls battled back coming three points shy of the Rams finishing the third quarter, 41-37. Jefferson held the lead throughout the entirety of the fourth quarter with the Owls unable to minimize the scoring gap. Jefferson hit four baskets from the floor in the last period, supplemented by six successful free throw attempts. The Owls were only able to convert three baskets in the last quarter with four of those points coming from Santoro, to finish the action at 55-43.

The Owls are back in action on Thursday, Dec. 29 when they host the University of the District of Columbia in a non-conference matchup set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
